i am an ece teacher and at one stage had a jackson and an ashton in the under twos at the same time. i was constantly calling them the other ones name, and they werent even brothers!

So. For a slightly more unusual name that I quite like.... what do people think about Bryce?

I like it, but it doesn't fit our criteria of having a shorter nickname available. So, I am in two minds.

I also don't want people to see/hear it and think "what a terrible name!!"

It would be Bryce Matthew (after DH).

I love the name Ashton :) That was our boy choice when we had Gabrielle.

Personally, I wouldn't worry much about what the names sound like together or what anyone thinks. You are naming your new baby, it doesn't have to be matchy, or not be matchy, it can be anything you like.

I've never really understood why people worry about how kids names sound together? They are two separate people & will be adults a lot longer than kids.
I think you'd be fine with Jackson & Ashton. My youngest is called jasmine and our surname starts with a T. We were worried people would think jasmine tea. No-one even puts 2 and 2 together unless we say something. Name them what you want. I think we put far too much thought into names and worry about things that never happen.

We have some similar-ish sounding names in our family, not an issue when talking or calling from one room to another, but when yelling from the house to the woolshed, for example, sometimes it can be hard to know who's name it is. So, how far are you likely to yell them?

Send DH to the place they'd be, and then write down a list that goes "Ashton, Jackson, Jackson, Ashton, Jackson..." and call to him. Get him to write down the names that he hears. Then he comes back and you compare the lists... and ta-da... *scientific* proof whether they are too similar or not

I think that Ashton is a great name. And any name can go together if you want!

Also like someone else said although they both are spelt with the 'on' at the end they generally don't sound it, I always hear Jackson as 'SIN" and Ashton as Ash 'TYN" like Ashton Kutcher.

I think people read too much into it too .
As I said before , they aren't going to be referred to as a pair for their entire lives, they aren't always going to be referred to as a pair , or called together in the same sentence .

hehe well you could, cos Oliver is Ollie, and Olive could be Liv.

 

Back to OT, I think they sound fine together.  I think people read too much into names ending the same etc.  If you like the name, just use it.  And you will probably shorten their names a lot anyway, Jack and Ash, or JJ and Ash.

Love both of the names but I agree that they sound a bit too similar if you string them together, unless you are going to call Ashton Ash.

ETA: just reading back, wouldn't the pronunciation would be the same - the "on" for both is really pronounced "in" right? As in Jacksin and Ashtin?

I agree with babyg - the pronounciation is diff , so I dont see it as an issue at all that the last 2 letters are the same. Unless u are gonna pronounce them differntly than how we are pronouncing, so that both names sound the same?
I didnt even get what u were saying about your relatives names either! Maybe Im dumb!
My friends frist 2 girls have names eanding is "lia" and she was worried that number 3, also a girl wold feel left out without a name that also ends the same. She has a diff name and I think they all go well together.
I also have a friend called Melanie, who's younger sisters are Stephanie and Natalie!

We also had lots of girls names but found boys name so hard. Yes, I have used the only boys name I like. I have tons of girls names I like but no more boys names up my sleeve. Some I like but not LOVE, so it's hard. No I think although they both end in ON - the ending of each name sounds different because of the consonant before the ON

ie:

Jackson sounds like it ends 'syn' and
Ashton sounds like it ends 'ton'

I always knew Lily would be a Lily, boys names one the other hand, not one I 'like' let alone LOVE! Especially DP who can't pick any names but disses all mine!

I am lost if I have another girl though because again hard to find a name I like let alone love!

with Caitlyn and Tyler , neither name I loved , but I liked them BETTER than the other names on the list , and now I can't imagine them being anything else .
For this one,(which I found yesterday is another GIRL ) we were going to go with Alysha, not because I loved it , but because ....it had the LY that Caitlyn and Tyler both have .
But now DH has started suggesting Amelia again ,which is a name we were going to call Ty if he was a girl .
So now...I don't know !
I don't know if I still love it , I love the name Olivia , but DH doesn't like it at all .
Hard thing names .

Kelly... do I love the name? Hmmmm. I love Jackson's name but have never found another name I like quite as much!! It's definately in the top 3 and it's DH's preference.

DH thinks I am mad to even be asking on here.

I think if I LOVED the name it wouldn't be an issue, but because I am already uncertain it's not helping to have a potential problem.

I think I am too fussy. There are lots of names I quite like, but not really any that I totally love (well, a couple of 'er' names but the surname thing is a problem there).

Might end up pulling something out of a hat!

I like the names .
And I think they sound fine together , yes , they both end with ON , and yes it will be confusing at times, but hell, when you are dealing with two kids you'll probably muddle up their names no matter what they are at times.

And they are not going to be called in a pair for the rest of their lives , people wont always be calling out "Jackson !!! Ashton!!! "

My great uncle's name is Charlie (he's in his 70s) and to be honest I've never thought of it as just a kids name. I do like Ashton though and I don't think having a Jackson and an Ashton is a big deal. I like Ashton and I don't have a problem with them both ending in -on. Myself and two of my siblings have first names all ending in an "e" sound, the other two had different sounding names. Never had any problems or confusion, nor had I ever really thought about it 'til just now! I think originally we probably wouldn't shorten. Or maybe we would. We don't use Jack, but do use JJ.
Can't have Asher as our surname ends in 'er'.

The only other option we have is Charlie. However that goes against our 'rules' of having a name that can be shortened or nicknamed if the child so desires. I can't stand Charles but think Charlie is cute for a kid, but not so great for a grown up.

I don't think it's a problem. They have different sounds at the start of each syllable, which helps differentiate them.

I like Ashton but not Jackson. Reason is that there are too many people I know with kids called Jackson and I like names that are not too common. I wouldn't have them together tho but I am not sure if that is what you are asking or not.

They do have a similar ending sound, and the can cause confusion when calling them. My brother and I both our names end in similar sounds and we were forever ignoring our mother cause we thought she was calling the other person. (wasn't always intentional)

I like Ashton as a name but would not have it if I had a Jackson. You are right they sound too similiar. Do you call Jackson, Jack at all ?

Ashton is an old name....it was my Pop's middle name and I would've seriously considered it had we been having a boy (and if DF's stupid surname wasn't so hard to match lol). I don't think you'll have any problems with the on/on thing....in fact it's quite cute

We're really struggling with trying to find a name for our second boy that is due in November. We've spent a lot of time on this task!

One name that we have agreed is Ashton.

But I am really worried that it is too similar to Jackson.

Jackson and Ashton.

Would really love your absolute honest opinion here! DH doesn't see the problem but I think the 'on/on" stuff is too similar.
