Author: TheKelly
Subject: 35416
Posted: 26 August 2010 at 5:15pm

I think its a pretty effed up world we live in when a person who abused an innocent 3 year old , gets out after 3 measly years in jail .

Did anyone watch Oprah the other day ? THAT was shocking . It was about cases in 3rd world countries and how badly the women are treated, I knew they were, but I hadn't heard individual horror stories

1st one -mother of 3, has the misfortune of getting pregnant , baby dies inside her , she needs emergency C section , dr refuses unless he is paid $100, journalist that is there at the hospital pays, AND donates his blood cos she needs a transfusion .
Dr leaves for the night without performing it, journalist finds woman 3 hours later in her own faeces, vomit and urine , she got the c section the next day , but the baby had poisoned her blood stream and she died 2 days later

second woman -nearly starved to death , was raped by soldiers (that seems to be their weapon of choice against women ) and cos of this she was seen as unworthy and undesireable
She also died

3rd girl , this was horrible , kidnapped at 13 from her village, taken to brothel , she was a virgin when she was sold the first time, she was sold as a virgin FOUR times, they would sew up her vagina after each intercourse .
Women in those places aren't allowed to ask for condoms, so she got pregnant twice, second time they did an abortion at 4 months ,in excruciating pain , she asked if she could have one night off, the doctor stabbed her in the eye , blinding her and disfiguring her, no longer desirable , she was kicked out onto the street .
She was picked up by some sort of organisation (the good kind ) and given a second chance at life shes still scarred mentally and physically tho .
Oh , and the brothel was run by the chief of police .

Yeah , its a sick world we live in , both here , as far as the rights of victims ,and children etc go , and further as far as women living in places where they are seen as less than men , go .
But its also a good world, cos there are always people who want to fight for justice and what is right ....might take awhile to change the world, probably wont happen while we're alive, but at least we are on the right track , I take some comfort in that

oh , and im sorry ....banning junkfood ?? bu bu..but ...what will I eat !!!

And Animal Liberation is the most revolting book I have ever read- in that the subject matter is hugely disturbing- . Everything he writes makes me think long and hard, that's for sure. Author: Delli
Subject: 35416
Posted: 26 August 2010 at 11:20am

I think far too much emphasis has been put on the matter of weight in pageants, weight is only a small part of what is inherently wrong with them.

If the pageants were JUST about beauty, I think I would have less of a problem with them. Just as I don't have a problem with competitions based on only academic or sporting abilities. The fact is though, they are not just about beauty - they try to incorporate a whole host of supposed values women should have that I do not agree with, and therein lies my problem with them

I also don't really understand the comments about it being the parents job first and foremost to instill self-confidence and esteem in their children. Of COURSE it is. It seems a bit of a redundant thing to say . I don't see anyone here saying that they don't like the pageants because they are the sole reason for low self esteem in kids today - nobody is saying that they are letting their kids be bought up by the media. Most of the replies I've read from people who are not a fan of the pageants were intially just commenting on the fact that they don't think they convey a positive message - and then the whole weight argument got a bit out of control

Just my opinion though

    Author: HoneybunsMa
Subject: 35416
Posted: 25 August 2010 at 11:48pm

Ok so I just wanted to say that I have skim read everything.

I am overweight have been since I was ooooooh 11? I was an active kid at primary played everysport under the sun, continued playing netball at intermediate but even though I was active I still ended up with the pot belly. Dropped sports and became very antisocial at college. I was not an have never had a flat stomach and am now so incredibly overweight that I know I should do something about it. But I have learnt that with myself its not the scales that are the problem its the size. I saw a photo of when DP and I got together and thought wtf was my problem then I was so skinny, now haha its laughable.

I know plenty of woman who are drop dead gorgeous skinny, tall you name it and they still think they are fat, ugly one of my bestfriends is one who has always been a healthy 12 but thought she was fat her whole entire life that hasn't changed as she's gotten older. She learnt that she enjoyed exercising and that it made her feel better about herself. I actually don't know any woman more so then men that are happy with their body. There's always something too jiggly, or flabby etc.

I haven't strived to be a beauty contestant or a model as without alot of hardwork and money (for gym memberships not surgery!) then its not that realistic. I know that I can shift alot more of my weight if I eat better and go for walks which is hard with sh*t weather we have had lately. But my biggest thing is the lack of motivation once I'm doing it is fine, its the going to do it that stops me.

I do think that the girls in pageants overall have a better/healthier look then the models of late especially when heroin chic was in. If my daughter wanted to look like a pageant model then I would encourage her to be the best her that she can be. It is as simple as turning the tv off at this age though. At 14 I would have wished to look like a beauty contestant, have a flat stomach etc but heck at 26 I still wish I could look like a beauty contestant and have a flat stomach that hasn't changed.

My aim is to raise my daughter to love herself and have confidence if that means insisting she does at least one after school activity to boost her confidence whether that be music, dance, sport or academics then so be it. I will work my ass off to make sure that she doesn't grow up having the same self debt as I have had. Although I know alot of that is because of my family dynamics and not influenced on tv, influenced by the 3naturally slim, toned brothers maybe

Oh and when I was pregnant regardless of the fact that I was growing another person I still hated my belly showing.

Edited by HoneybunsMa

My self esteem goes up and down, depending on "stuff" not how I look, although a few things fell into place for me over the last few months that made me realise that *to quote Oprah* I'm not living my best life...
1) my clothes got very tight again and to go up a size was entering no go zone
2) my son started playing rugby and I was too unfit to do anything but stand on the sidelines
3) my kids wanted to know why I had a fat tummy and no baby in it
4) I don't want to be the "fattest mum in class" - my mother was my entire school life and it was sooo embarssing as that coupled with a low self esteem made for a grumpy nasty mum
5) said mother just had leg amputated above the knee from untreated diabeties, had 24 heart attacks - yes 24 - in critical care unit after due to chronic blockages in arteries and she looks 78 not 58.
6) I owe it to my kids to live and play with them not through them
7) I owe it to myself.

So I have begun the slow journey, with a trainer and over 12 months..need to get through first 12 weeks first, though, lol.
So that said, yes I am still obese (although now 5 kgs less obese in the last 5 weeks) BUT due to working out 6 days a week, and working damn hard, I'm fitter than lots of people half my size, so...

Not doing it because of miss universe, am defiantely love me as i am, but I do want to set a good example to my kids.

One of my friends who is a size 16 is so absolutly stunning and her confidence is amazing she just oozes sex appeal! But if she didnt have that confidence I think she would look overweight - if that makes sense?

Of course I won them over with the intelligence and ended up being the leader in the group (bahahahaha)...but you know, I still remember that day and how annoyed I felt about it.

There have been other times in life where guys have treated me like a bimbo just coz I looked like I did, not that I am saying I am hot and beautiful, (tho I am lol) and one job I actually left coz I worked in IT and despite being super good at my job, it was a real 'little boys club' in the IT team and it drove me nuts. Especially when they thought they were being clever and weren't and eventually I would be proved right about something haha!

But then, there is nothing more satisfying than being assumed to be not good at something and then showing up the naysayers!

How many other women have encountered this sort of thing?
