We used one of those blue tarpaulins from a hardware store. When it needs a wash peg it to the close line and spray with the hose. I would, if I could do it over, buy a sturdy piece of lino from an off cut place as it is easier to wipe between hosings. Oilcloth makes great messy mats and doesn't fray - you can just cut it to size. We have the same problem with our carpet, Manda!
We started with cheap tablecloths that got ruined pretty fast. Then I got some of the vinyl stuff from Spotlight when they had a sale on, and I got the one with the road map pattern, so he can play on it too. He loves it! Yep any of those would be a great idea, although I'd recommend 'investing' in something quite sturdy if it's for long-term use. the plastic tablecloths can wear holes in them after not too long, particularly if your wee one is twisting the chair about.

If only there was a food 'cube' you could get though, the fling factor means we have food spread in all directions some nights!! They have "messy mats" at Farmers and Baby City too, not sure how much they are but pretty cheep I think. I picked up a cheap plastic table cloth from spotlight, its been fab so far.

I looked at getting some of that vinyl material that they just cut to your measurements initially but it was really expensive.

a shower curtain would be an option too - you might be able to pick one up more cheaply than the vinyl stuff from spotlight.  Having said that, they do a vinyl thingy that has roads and things on it so could be dual purpose.

As a plastic type of mat that would fit under a childrens table and chair to hold any mess. DS is constantly putting marks on the carpet. (No lino area for him to eat) and im sick of try to get the stains out. Surely there is something instead of a towel???
