I had always intended to have Isla in the basinette in our room for as long as possible, but we ended up having to move her into her cot in her own room at 3 and a half weeks as she was a very big baby and too big for her basinette. BEST thing we have ever done! She has been the best sleeper since then and because it was such an easy transition...... I wasn't upset in the slightest. Ollie moved into his cot three nights ago........he's just gone 5 weeks - which is pretty good considering he was never going to be in our room at all! then we had him and i couldn't do it!! he he.
In the end he got too noisy with his windy grunting and so much broken sleep for us ( which creates a crying mummy!!) so we decided to put him in his own room so we could tag team the nights if necc.
In the end we've all slept better! we don't lay awake with his noises wondering if he's waking up or not!!

Aww thank you At least i know im not the only one that felt this way The cot would fit in our room, but it would be abit crowded. It is hard isn't it. When we moved DS into his own room, he was only 6 weeks old, but I could see and hear him from my bed and we kept him in his bassinet to start with. After 8 weeks, we ended up moving him into his cot, as it was too hot in his bassinet and he kept hitting his arms on the sides.
We all slept better after the first few worrying nights, until the first night he slept right through. He was only 3 months old and I freaked out when I woke up and it was the morning. By the way - I was quite upset the first few nights he slept in his own room and felt anxious about it. But adjusted quickly after that. At first I had the baby monitor cranked up so high I could hear when he stirred, but soon turned that off and could hear him easily through the wall as he's next to our room.

I did it the wrong way. Absolute wrong way. I waited till he was too big for the bassinet before moving him - he was too big at 4mths old! (No room for cot in our room).

So I put him in his new cot and his new room and he was terrible at getting to sleep for about a week.

I would recommend putting the cot in your room and then gradually easing into the new room. Or vice versa. Bassinet into the new room. Try and do it gradually.

What helped in to settle eventually was a few things: blackening out the blinds (he was used to drapes around the bassinet and the cot didn't have that), a muslin cloth that smelled of me, and because he was used to us rocking him in the bassinet, we pat him to sleep instead (eventually did the Sleep Sense Programme coz that didn't end up working well). We also used white noise and got rid of stimulating things eg. cot mobile.

It's great if you can put the bassinet in the cot for a few days so they adjust to the new view from the safety of bassinet.

i think both times we did that and just for all sleeps.

I hear people say its tough but i had all mine in their rooms as soon as humanly possible - i just sleep that much better and oh sleep is so precious!

Oh it's hard isn't it! One thing i'm looking forward to with #2 is having that cariboo in the corner of our room again.

What worked for us was to have day naps in the cot, and night sleeps in our room, and that helped with the transition for both mum and bub.

We did night sleeps first with the bassinette hung inside the cot. We were planning on doing it for only a few hours expecting him to wake up early but he slept till about 2.30am so we ended up leaving him there. He was fine, we were more nervous Then I think after about a week I transferred him to the cot. My main worry at the time was not being able to rock the cot like I could rock the bassinette but I started patting and shushing at the same time as rocking and then tried to do minimal rocking before the transition.

I just moved Tom into his cot on Tues and he had his first night alone in his room last night (on Tues night I chickened out and after 3 hrs moved him back into our room for the night). you would think because it was #2 it would be easier- but nope, it still took me ages to fall asleep thinking about him. If I could have put in our room I would have, but it wouldn't fit.

I didn't worry about him too much during the night through, as I still had to get up to him about 4 times during the night 

 

With Ella I had nightmares for the first 2 nights of moving her, but after that I was fine.

 

For both kids, I think the move was harder on me than it was on them- just both adjusted fine.

I did it @ 7 months, after we finally had possession of our new house. Day sleeps first, then night. Same with her bed, it's worked fine. It'll be a few restless nights for you though when you feel the need to check on her every 5 minutes, it is a weird time not having them right there anymore. DP suggested trying a day nap there and she slept really well, and then after a couple of days we had her sleeping there day and night, I really missed her! But listened over the monitor for her and she adjusted really well!

Completely not stupid! Can you fit the cot in your room for a while? That's what we've done. So.. the time has come where our son needs to be moved into his cot. His cot is in his room but he has been sleeping in his Bassinet in our room since he was born.

If his cot was in our room it wouldnt be a problem.. but i know he has to sleep in his own room at some stage.
