I know that as well as you do, I worked in Army PR for a few years. Of course we always distinguished between the two. I was just pointing out that the media do it deliberately, even though it is incorrect and annoying. Maybe they do it because many people (eg. Bizzy) don't know the difference.

But yes, such a tragedy - it sounds like we lost an outstanding young officer who had so much potential. My first response to the news was to say "very sad but inevitable" to DH - I understood the situation in Afghanistan has been escalating for some time, and Bamiyan is no longer considered a 'safe' province, like it was. The whole thing is tragic, the saddest part after talking to DH, is it seemed so inevitable that someone from NZ would get killed over there.

I didn't know Tim but my little town I live in has had its fair run of tragedy lately and it is having an impact on everyone.

Becks I'm the opposite, down here a 'soldier' when on deployment is anyone (always referred in the media as soldiers as to not give away ranks before family is notified). It's only the older officers, or ones that aren't well liked, that care what they are called. Very, very, sad. I have 2 friends who were very close to him, my thoughts are with his family and friends. Such devastating news.

I spent the whole morning terrified whose name was going to pop up Huge condolences to Tim's family. Didn't know him, but of course DH did (being from Burnham).

Baker and Ball (the injured men) are known to DH too, Baker is a good mate of his so it's hit him pretty hard knowing one of the guys has been injured. So unfortunate, although with so many near misses it was just a matter of luck (or being very, very unlucky in this case).

A dark day for all us military families

Fallen - rest assured, personnel's next of kin are always informed before the media even knows, that's what makes me sleep at night when DH is in places like that - I don't have to watch the news for news (it's all crap anyway - even complained to TV3 tonight about their bs journalism)

That is so so sad. My brother is in the RAF and is in Afghanistan at the moment and it's so scary when I hear things like this. I'm afraid to watch the news, just incase something bad happens

From what I can gather from the news reports its a young guy. The wounded won't be back at work in a hurry either.

My condolences goes out to the family and friends of the deceased person. My heart sunk when I saw the news on tv this morning. A close family friend (Sebastian's godfather) is over there.
