Do you mean when they go hard and stick out? I bought 2 of mine on sale at PP, getting them for $20 each and the other 2 from www.maternitydirect.co.nz, they have a fair range of tops ranged between $28 and $40.

The great thing about all 4 of my tops is none of them look like BFing tops and will be just as lovely to wear well afterwards so will get heaps of use out of them.

I think it all depends on the individual and your baby. I really feel the cold so a breastfeeding singlet under a hoodie etc isn't warm enough for me. Also, pulling tops over baby like my mum used to do doesn't work for me either as my son is an incredibly fussy baby who screams and refuses to feed when I try this. And if your baby throws up a lot, you'll also need more than just a couple. I've got 3 merino breastfeeding tops, 4 singlets, 2 going out tops, and 4 Egg twist tops and even that's not enough with the amount of vomiting my baby does! The majority have been bought off trademe over the past few months. Ok heres my 2cents worth...

'breastfeeding tops' are a new age consumer product..

you really dont need them.. they are generally expensive...

Go to farmers or kmart and buy some singlets that you can pull down to feed and wear a regular top over..

Also I just got some stretchy singlets from Jeans West today 2 for $30 they are like lycra (sp?) so very stretchy but won't over stretch iygwim. Yeah that's the name of them! hehe. they are good for covering tummy and just wear whatever over top. can pull right up to under boobs if need be.

I splurged and bought one nice 'proper' breastfeeding top to wear out places, it works really well - Mummy Matters Miranda top.

Bought it in black and because it's such a classic style (long sleeve, v-neck) I can wear it with anything and use it after breastfeeding. It doesn't look anything like a breastfeeding top - I have the K-mart singlets and while they are great for casual wear the line under the boobs gives them away as b/f tops.

They are on sale at the Mummy Matters website for $49 at the moment.

I had the nuture BFing singlets from farmers... I loved them in lived in them the whole time I BF... they were so comfy and I found them quite supportive... I got mine off another lovely OB lady, they're the Maya Mumm 2be range from the warehouse super comfy and can wear any top over the top. Will check out Kmart too.

I had a couple of those things that are like boob tubes but worn about the belly when pregnant so that it lengthened tops....anyway, I started using them as boob tubes instead after DS was born and then would just wear any old top and pull that up, pull the boob tube down and pretty much covered...
I did get a breastfeeding top but it was so flippin voluminous that it was more painful than it was worth lol!!

I second Kmart singlets - I just wore them under normal tops then you can pull your normal top up and be covered up by the singlet.

I got breast feeding singlets from Kmart much cheaper than the 'branded' ones. They cover your tummy and I wear a top over it which I pull up then unclip the singlet and feed.

Otherwise if I used my bf bra I wear a boobtube over it and pull that down or I wear a stretchy singlet and pull that down if that makes sense.

To be honest I was all anxious about buying particular tops for breastfeeding, but for the first little while you are in hospital then - in my case anyway - don't get out of your nightie or out of bed often and I didn't find button down tops that helpful. I felt more exposed. If you have a top that is loose-fitting, you can pull your shirt up and your baby will cover your bare belly and your t-shirt will cover your shoulders and as much of your breast as you want. So personally I wouldn't go off buying loads of shirts, I simply didn't need them. I just went for simple button up/down tops, or deep v necks or domes from regular stores.
