Have a bbq. That way DH gets to cook for all the people and you just have to do salads. Do you have a garage. If it is in a few months then the blokes can hang out with the bbq in the garage with the majority of the booze and mums and kids inside for the most part. If the weather is dodgy then DH gets to stay outside with the bbq which is poetic justice in a way. lol. You could tell people to byo a salad to share and provide sausages and burgers this way less work for you so that you get to enjoy you childs birthday. well i just had Amelias first birthday in the weekend . i originally said i was just going to have a quiet afternoon tea at my house .... well that ended up being me rushing around like a headless chicken catering to 34 adults and 12 children in my small house , my lounge isnt tiny but with over 40 people crammed into it it felt like the size of an office. It was good , and all went to plan but i was rushed off my feet . i made a s**t load of food but when i had finally finished cooking and handing it all out there was none left for me so by the end of it all i was starving . Amelia did really well with all the attention , she didnt cry or get upset once and when everyone sang happy birthday to her she sat there and smiled at everyone like a wee princess. she also got very spoilt. 

It was a great day but if i had my time over i would have either made someone help me out or i would have made it a bit smaller .

We're only inviting close family so Aunties or uncles of DD, not our aunties and uncles but also dds grandparents and her great grandparents (though mine won't be coming as they're giving dd her own party) that totals umm 11 people. Party's are hard work, i regretted inviting so many people to dds 1st birthday. We had a pretty big party for DS's 1st birthday - all friends and their kids and C's baby group pals plus their parents too. It was about 30 adults and 13 kids from memory. No family as we're overseas but if they'd been able to come they would have been there too.

We had an afternoon tea time party ie 3-5 as it fit best with C's naps at the time and meant most people had left in time for his tea as well!! Added bonus was that ppl don't tend to get smashed mid afternoon so altho we served beer and bubbly there was loads left over and no drunkeness!

We have DD's first birthday coming up in a couple of months and DH and I have different views of what we should do for it.

I would like just close family and grandparents, great grandparents and my best friend. This already adds up to 22 people including DH and I.

DH thinks we should include his uncles/aunties and their children (who are all under 5) as well as our friends and their children since we always get invited to all their birthday parties. This would put the tally up to around 40 people.

I would like to invite everyone but our house is pretty small and though we have a nice deck we can't garentee a nice day and for us all to be squished inside. Also I am not much of a drinker (DH is however) and so I don't really think a first birthday should be about a piss up really

DH also has his birthday that month so I have said that maybe he can have his party then with all his friends but then I feel stink that Im not inviting our friends to DD's birthday even though they invite us.....
