I would second Prego - its awesome, and very family friendly. Its got a lovely vibrant "italian family" feel to it! Its not cheap, but not uber-expensive either (for auckland standards). Its just on Ponsonby Rd, so nice and central!

La Porchetta would be my pick - they are kid friendly. There's one in Hobson St and one in Parnell.

Prego is really good. It's an Italian Restaurant in Ponsonby and is very child friendly.

I think Lonestar is a good recommendation, very yummy food, and last time we went with a 7 year old and it was all good! They have a kids menu, so presumably they are fine with the wee ones! My only suggestion is the meals are HUGE!! Think Man-Sized, so if you get a choice, order the smaller meal!!

Plus (thinking as an Aucklander), parking outside Lonestar in New Market is free after 6pm, which always helps!

if you like Japanese there is a great tepanyaki restaurant inside the stamford plaza hotel - It would be entertaining for you and the kids - we're thinking of taking our daughter there for her 5th birthday -
it's quite a show - throwing food around etc the kids will love it :)

I can fully recommend the best restaurant I have been to in Auckland is Dine by Peter Gordon...

it is pretty pricey - so definitely a once in a blue moon opportunity - but the food is impeccable DIVINE! every course and bite of food made me smile. it was soooo good

for a 3 course meal for 2 plus a few glasses of wine we paid about $180 - I know it's a lot but for me it was worth it - we get out to dinner and somewhere really special like once a year now so it not like we do it often :)

Observatory is good, but quite seafood orientated,
Orbit is the "higher class" a la carte restaurant, Fortuna is quite kid friendly. I took DD at about 3months old to Lonestar in New market, we didn't ask for a high chair so don't know if they have one but we were ok holding her.

I would stay clear of princes wharf and the viaduct on a Fri evening having worked down there for a year or so. It can get quite rowdy and raucous on a weekend night even early as alot of the places are the end of week drinks.

The Observatory - they have an early sitting at 5.45 which we went to. My niece was only 4 at the time and she had a great time.

Iguacu would be family friendly for brunch on a Sunday but definitely not on a Friday night. Even then as family friendly as they get is a "dirty" highchair and a few crayons.

Sky City would be good .. lonestar is pretty loud (and packed) on a Friday and I probably wouldnt take my kids there.

It you dont want "fine dining" then La Porchetta would be ok with kids, the food isnt amazing though.

I haven't taken DD to many restaurants yet but I will just say that it can be surprising how accommodating places can be about babies... maybe pick a few that sounds nice and give them a ring and ask whether they have highchairs etc and whether bringing a baby would be suitable...

I did take DD to a nice restaurant in Palmerston North... phoned ahead because it didn't seem like the type of place which would be child friendly at all.
The staff were awesome about seeing if I needed anything for her at all, we were seated in a less busy section of the restaurant, they supplied a highchair and helped me put her in it! I wasn't made to feel like it was any sort of bother which was really nice!

I will be interested to hear other Mum's reccomendations, DD is at the age now we can probably start bringing her along more! I second the Orbit idea. Otherwise it might be best to try some of the quieter places down on Princess Wharf or the Viaduct. TBH I am struggling to come up with any family friendly places in the Akld CBD on a Friday night! We went to Orbit in Sky City with my nieces they were 4 and 9 at the time.  There is a buffet/smorgasboard style restaurant up the tower - meant the kids could get served straight away, we went to the earlier session/time at 5.00-5.30.

I recently went to Lone Star for my Birthday and my meal was free. Don't know how kid friendly they are though. (they let in un-supervised teenagers so can't be too bad).
