Yeah I think the SIDS risk of babies over the age of 1yo are pretty low. Interesting , I never knew this .
I have a polar fleece blanket Ty sleeps on top of to keep him off the cold cotton sheet , (C sleeps on one too )
Im not so worried about the risk now , since hes over a year and often sleeps down the other end of the cot anyway , and next baby will be newborn in the summer , so thats handy .

They're fine as playmats, carseat rugs, pram blankets etc. Really Just be vigilant with what your baby is wearing when, remembering the one layer more than us rule. It could be just as damaging overdressing your baby but we don't hear masses about that one either! And if you are checking how they are going regularly, you're going to know if tey are getting too hot yeah?

eta: remember as the youngin's get older, their heat/temp regulation systems continue to improve and develop as well. Its not like anyone under the age of two is going to swelter under a fleece rug

Hi ladies

Im expecting a baby in December and Ive been given heaps of polar fleece blankets, I must have 5 or 6.

Having heard this I don't want to take the risk and will get some cotton/merino blankets for the bassinet and cot, but would it be ok just to use the polar fleece ones as blankets during the day? Like to hold baby in or keep them warm etc or should I avoid them altogether?

I have to agree, when I first had DD things were far tighter & her top bassinet blanket was polarfleece. For sure they can't temp regulate. themselves as much when they are younger, but when you're up with them so much anyway it only takes a finger behind the neck to get a general idea of how they are feeling, and then there are the other external things you can do to control the room temp etc.

I heard that its ok for when there not a newborn anymore because they can regulate their temperature better. Jarvi has a fleece sleep sack - only because i can't afford $150 for a merino sleeping bag. He sleeps fine in it, doesnt wake up wet or anything. I have one that doesn't have arms so if he gets to hot his arms are there to cool him down!

I think everything is over reacted about these days.. You have to have the flashest of everything or else "your baby is at risk" .. bext1 they do a lot of things a bit different in NICU though... I mean they sleep babes on their tummies but we all know that we are not "supposed" to do that at home....

They are also being monitored in NICU which they are not at home so I am not sure I would use that as a reason to do it....

We have a polar fleece sleep sack for one of the twins. the inner is lined in cotton, think i got it at the baby factory? But the boys don't sweat in it, and it does the job keeping them warm in the winter which i guess is the whole purpose of sleep sacks anyway.

Koby has a polar fleece blanket which the twins used in NICU, they have heaps of them there. Its your choice first and foremost what you put your baby in to sleep and this post is in no way meant to scare monger, however, current guidelines from MOH and WHO state babies should sleep in natural fibres only...

The reason has nothing to do with it being on their face but with the fact that unnatural fibres like polar fleece do not breathe and as a baby can not regulate their temp properly can overheat which is the link to SIDS.

A 3rd year mw student friend of mine (though I can not say for fact as I did not read the figures myself) told me that of the 50 something SIDS deaths last year only ONE did not have polar fleece on their bed.

That was enough for me to not use them...

We personally only use natural fibres on the bed but only because our kids run hot and they wake up wet sleeping under fleece.

I wouldnt see why its a sids risk .. I am also in the natural fiber camp as well. We only use cotton and wool blankets in his cot. We have 2 hand made woollen blankets so we use them. I personally only use natural fabrics on my baby. As far as I am aware it is due to the regulation of body heat, this isn't possible in synthetic fabrics. Check out the below link:

I think it should be the individuals choice myself. if you like the polar fleece use them.. it's not like they are actually going over babies face? They are a sleep sack which means they are like a sleeping bag.

I thought the issue with polar fleece was due to the fabric not breathing, and it retains moisture there fore making it cold.
Where as something made from merino/wool wicks moisture away from the skin keeping it dry and warm.
That was one of the reasons I'd told not to get too much in the way of polar fleece blankets or clothing.

Just learned in another thread that polar fleece blankets are a SIDS risk because they don't breathe. Would this be the same for sleep sacks? I thought maybe not because it's not like a blanket that could go over their face.
