I think the younger you do it the easier it is. We made a deal when the girls were born we wouldn't let them have it past a yearq. So shortly after they turned one we went cold turkey. It only took a day or two before they forgot about it completely. But we threw out the dummys so we couldn't be tempted

My question is "why do you want to get rid of it"?

Is it because you are worried she is reliant on it? 9 months old is not that old to be honest.

I had the best advice from my Karitane nurse about dummies. She said that it it works for you to settle the baby to sleep then go for it. If it starts to be a problem (like needing to be put in again heaps during the night) then you need to get rid of it.

My DD#2 still has a dummy and she is now 1yr. Up until about 10 months she was swaddled so I would need to get up occasionally to put her dummy back in. Once we stopped the swaddling she was able to put her dummy back in again by herself. I get up to check on her about once a night anyway and occasionally to put her dummy back in if she can't quite "find" it.

Julie that is exactly what happened with me!
When he started waking up all night wanting his dummy back i just took it away and he started sleeping through the night! Learn't how to settle himself back to sleep. I agree with the cold turkey concept. I did that with my stuborn baby at 5 months. She was dependent on it for all sleeps. Once she could pull it out herself I had to get rid of it. We had a couple of days of crying, but on day two she just cried herself to sleep. Now she cries for 15 mins max to go to sleep, if that, and if it goes longer we get her up for 15 mins for cuddles and then she goes down with no tears and no dummy.

I would recommend just taking it away for a couple of days, only if you will be able to handle the crying. I took Jarvi's dummy off him a few months ago, and i just went cold turkey, and he completely forgot about it after a few naps. and he only had it during naps and night time sleeps.. He does have a comfort toy though that hes had since birth! Another way is to "trade" it at Xmas time with the Elves for Xmas presents. Apparently works from around the age of 2.

A wise woman once told me that there is NO easy way to get rid of a dummy and no way to "wean" off one which we tended to agree with.

We went cold turkey at 3 months - just stopped offering it but I offered a blankie that I had slept with a few times instead which worked well. She just has her blankie at bedtime instead.

DD was alot younger but i just went cold turkey for day sleeps and when she learnt to settle during the day without it i took it off her at night and she was fine. My DS is still newborn so we haven't had to deal with this yet, but I remember Mum managing this with my younger brothers...

What she did was use scissors to cut a hole in the teat of the dummy. It means they can't suck it as well, and they start not liking it, and very soon give it up completely themselves.
