my son probably spend less than 30 minutes (not all at once) in his exersaucer each day on average.

Off topic a bit but I have a friend who when her son was little refused to put him in anything except in a cot or carseat (& frequently told me I was ruining my son's development by using bouncer etc), anyway so after this little chap spent most of his time playing (& crying) on the floor (the "natural" way) he never crawled, only bumshuffled then went straight to walking. Some people can be a bit too precious I think! If baby's happy and mummy's sane I'm all for it.

Jackson has a bouncer, rocker and an exersaucer and he has met all his milestones with no problem. Well at risk of being labelled an ignorant bad parent all of my children have used an exersaucer, definitely for more than an hour a day. It says clearly on label they shouldn't use it til they can sit unsupported, which is about 6-7mths old. None of them were slow to walk or crawl, never have I seen an exersaucer tip over, and none of them have had developmental problems. My Son had a bouncer, bumbo and jumperoo and he's reached all his milestones no problems. But I knew to limit their use.
I guess its like anything in life, too much of a good thing is bad for you!

Actually I don't think I would be too far off the mark to say that most of my friend's children have spent way more than 5-10 mins at a time in exersaucers. The warnings on these products are open to interpretation and I would honestly not have thought twice about my child spending 20-30 mins in one while I did the vacuuming. I think I'm a reasonably sensible person..
I also wonder about child seats like Bumbo seats and bouncers (is that what you call those little baby recliners??). Thanks, I sometimes feel people get so pissed at another opinion on OB but I only wanted to point out some basic facts. Some mums and dads just don't know that its not good for them - hell I wouldn't have 10 yrs ago!

Why are people so defensive and assume that having common sense is common?

And in my experience - there are many, many people from all cultures that have no clue about this sort of thing, even if there are warnings and advice on a box. You guys must be really lucky to have educated friends.

skp - I think you've made a really good point here especially as you are speaking from experience. It's a good reminder that any activity that advances a child past their own capability should be limited. No matter now sensible mums are, we are busy too and it is easy to get carried away with household stuff while the littlies are contained.

Yes I agree, moderation means different things to different people BUT once again it comes down to common sense.
There are warnings on the packaging and on the seat, very clearly stating that it should not be used for long periods and never without supervision.
If you don't already know better but you can read, you're sorted.
I don't know anyone that has used one who would think it was okay to leave a small baby in one for more than 10 minutes, I imagine the people that you have encountered would be in a minority.

Well maybe to you 5-10 mins is moderation and common sense, but babies come into my work with problems because they stay for an hr or two in their exersaucer because the parents don't know any different and think it is perfectly fine!

Yes babies "should" crawl before they stand BUT in no way does SITTING (yes they should be sitting not standing, when they are strong enought they will be able to stand) in an exersaucer stop this from happening.

I think sometimes we take things too darn literally and need to use a little common sense!

If you were to leave them in it in favour of floor time, all the time maybe! No parent with any scrap of common sense would do that though.

Maybe you are thinking of walkers?
Our exersaucer was near impossible to tip over, even without the baby in it. And the baby can not move around the place in an exersaucer.
Again, it comes down to common sense and responsible use. No parent with either of those would place a child in one near stairs or other hazards or let their child use it unsupervised.

Any normal person would only have their baby in an exersauser or jumperoo for 5-10 minutes at a time so there is no problem in that. Just something to note, they are not great for babies development, babies are supposed to be quadrupedal before bipedal. Meaning they craw on all four for a reason. By putting them upright before their body can actually do it for themselves will slow down development.

And lots of babies have accidents in them also from tipping over, steps and so on....

Daniel loved his Fisher Price Jumperoo it was totally worth the money & I really recommend it. Its like a exersauser and jolly jumper in one. Where are you based? If in Auckland there's a great place called Johnny's Room that hires out toys for quite cheap. We hired one for just $10/month!

Since, we bought one off TM - just a really simple one with hardly any toys - it was cheaper that way and you can switch the toys around yourself.

We got the evenflow deluxe on TM for $60 - I looked into hiring and the place I looked was $20 a month so I figured that I might as well buy 2nd hand (any cheaper places for toys flick me the link!!). There's always loads on trade me.

We're hiring an evenflo deluxe through our local parents centre and DS just loves it. Best to wait until they start to sit up to get one as he wasn't happy being in it until then.

Def worth getting IMO!
We got one for DS's first Christmas and he loved it so much. He really enjoyed being upright and a part of what was going on, having the toys on there and having a bounce around in it.
He still used it for a while after he started walking, it was a great way to keep him contained when I was doing jobs etc.
When you're looking at buying, make sure the toys and seat are removeable for cleaning.
Ours was an Evenflo deluxe.
