I looove that hat with the pom poms. It's so cute! My husband would probably think I was mental if I knitted one of them though.

HuntersMama, I had never knitted anything but squares before, and decided to knit a hat using circular needles. The hardest bit (which isn't really hard at all - just look on Youtube, knitting websites, etc) is joining the stitches at the beginning to make it round, but you only have to do that once.

After that it's just like normal knitting!

Double pointed needles I found a wee bit harder, but it's mostly just because it's a bit more fiddly. Still managed both methods though and I'm a complete novice really!

You can use facebook. Upload a pic, then right click, go to properties, copy the address(URL).
Then to post on here click the 'add image' icon (top right above where you type your post) and paste

TaliP, I have heard the aussie sites are great for nappy material but I can't find any that beat the price of Greenbeans. I think the main issue is that we are way over in Perth so postage price is crazy high. I think I will make an order from gb this week actually.

I got the fabric from a little shop in Onehunga - cotton was only $8 a metre and is really good quality. Merion was $20 a metre which I thought was OK. I got a metre of both but have heaps left over so am looking for a pattern to make some little merino pants for DS.

Might try the zip then. Yeah a zip would be good, mine doesn't go all the way round the bottom coz I dunno where you get ginormous zips from (plus that sounded too tricky haha), mine is only 55cm long but is long enough I reckon....also used a non open ended on which might be a pain when he is older so I am gonna put a tab to cover over the zip puller thing with a snap on it so he cant fiddle..

All done!! Those snaps were a real pain, I hadnt used that type before and dont think I will again. I left the right side and bottom open for easy access and was planning to use snaps but might try a zip or velcro?

Chickoin, it is patterned pul, can get some good stuff over here in Aussie tho some of that stuff I got from Wigglebums who I don't think are about anymore?

Bex, no, it doesn't have car seat holes coz not really cold enough over here to need to have him in it early evening if we went out...but it would be easy peasy to add, all they would be are giant buttonholes! Small zigzag close together two rows of it and then cut the hole open...does that make sense?

Huntersmama how did you go? It is pretty easy really tho most patterns I saw were for non lined and had bias binding, I didn't use bias and just lined which is sooo easy. Even the zip was easy and that was the second time ever of doing a zip....if you don't know how to do anything then youtube is your friend lol!

BriandOli, she looks pretty pleased with herself, that material would have been tricky to sew!

gorgeous blanket 2xmummy...I am sure your little girl will be super snuggly in that!

www.sewingpatterns.com is a great resource as well. you have to pay for the patterns, but most of them are downloadable in PDF form - you print them out and stick them together to make the pattern. they range from $2.99USD to $6.99USD on sale. I've got HEAPS from there :D So much cheaper than getting them from spotlight etc etc (burda, butterick, vogue etc, all the proper brands) the $2.99 ones work out at about 4 bux with a crap exchange rate.

Wow, I love the knitted things! The fruit looks so cool. I thought the zebra was a small poodle in a knitted suit at first glance lol (maybe because I once dressed my small poodle in a knitted suit....)

The tissue idea is fantastic!! It really works!!

I'm am off to spotlight to get more supplies today.

For bibs I have used nylon backing, microfibre in the middle and flanellette on the front. Only problem is the flanellette gets stained really easily. They can go mouldy too if they are left damp for a few days. But other than that, they really soak up a lot of moisture. Ahhh genius with the tissue paper...will give it a whirl again...

So the bibs are top stitched one might say..I liked doing them that way too (inside out) except that the hole to turn inside out was a bit small (I added bamboo to suck up the moisture). I have some cool flannette coming, I would like to make fitted sheets for my bassinet. Anyone know where I can find some super basic instructions? My taggy blanket taught me how to use pins :D I have elastic, but not entirely sure how to use it. With bibs I always like a waterproof material on the back, it sucks having bibs that don't have that and then having to change their top cause liquid has soaked through. Waterproof nylon and PUL are both good options. What backing do people use on bibs? I would like to try and make my own, but not sure what the best material would be. The front will just be a cotton type fabric.

With sewing PUL it makes a difference if the shiny side is faced up or down too with how much slipping and pulling you get. eta; I made Jody some pj pants, surprised at how easy it was. Does anyone know an easy way (or a link to a free pattern online) to make a pj top? I have never attempted sleeves before.

I am on dial up speed until the end of the month so can't post pics due to not enough patience!

I own a sewing machine too but haven't really used it all that much - where I'm currently living there isn't much space to set it up and just experiment!

However, I do like to get crafty in other ways - and while I haven't actually completed anything for this bubs yet I've done other stuff for nieces and friend's babies (sadly I usually forget to take photos! oops).

This is a wall-hanging I did for my niece:


And I knitted this matinee dress, but haven't given it to anyone as the sizing is a bit wonky!

I made all Jakes jerseys (cut them down from 50c 100% woolen adult ones I found at the opshop bargain bin lol), pants, merino pjs (also doubled as thermal unders during the day), sleeping bags, MCN nappies, leggings, etc. I haven't had a huge amount of time lately but am getting back into it for winter.

I'm also wanting to make myself some BFing tops coz they're jolly expensive to buy!!!! Got any patterns MissAngel???

That is gorgeous! I finally used my sewing maching today, for the first time ever and the first time I've sewn since intermediate, and I made a wetbag! It took 3 attempts with the zip but I had no instructions and did it on a whim so I'm pretty stoked with myself

I think that would be a brilliant idea! I've purchased kniitng needles, a sewing machine and a crochet hook but I'm yet to actually make anything for this baby lol. I want to!

eta: Would a duvet cover for a cot duvet, be as easy as a massive two peice bag and a top zip?

yep i would use it. i would be interested in patterns but i don't actually have any myself i usually just make things up as i go. i could buy some tho so i had some to swap

Just out of interest, i'm thinking of asking if we can have a sub-forum made up for us DIY Mums. Would you use it? Would you be interested in doing pattern swaps etc? Does anyone actually know who I would ask for this sub forum? Lots of other places (and dont worry, i'm OB loyal!) have DIY sections that are really active, and I know theres HEAPS of creative ladies here!
