I bought small muslin squares to use for face and bum wipes (different colours!) when DS was teeny. They are the same thickness as the bigger muslin squares we used as burp cloths etc. So only one layer. They were fine, although they were a bit small once C got past newborn-ish size. If I was making them myself I'd do them more like a proper flannel size.

I also have some flannellette wipes, but they are no where near as nice as the muslin ones.

Mum and I were on the case of making our own wipes over Easter... I did all the cutting out and pinning she's doing all the sewing!

No overlocker here either so Mum is using the closest stitch option she has (think it's a form of zigzag).

We've gone for three layers of gause-type cotton muslin, and I wil wet as needed. We just use some chux type cloths from the $2 shop. $3 for a pack of 20 that I cut into quarters so $3 for 80. I only cut up about 20 so far and they have been going strong for about 3 months, wash up well and dont matter if they accidentally get thrown out - BARGAIN! i found some really cheap muslin wraps at spot light (3 for 4 dollars) so bought 3 packs and mum is going to overlock them. Two layers, and two diff colours - one for bum one for face! i think we are getting about 50 out of them for only 12 bucks!

We have been using squares of microfleece (i think) like on the inside of mcns. Fantastic as you dont have to hem them just cut them up great for sewing challenged people like myself lol! They are super soft and dry really fast too. When DD was going through wipes at every change I had a thermos on the change table that I topped up once a day and just wet them as I needed them.. Now she poos so rarely that I just wet them at the sink as I need them. Yup we keep them dry in one of those huggies wipes boxes that I got given (although I'm a nerd and fold them up so they come out like tissues come out of a tissue box ). Mine are two layers and I zigzag, then turn inside out and straight top stitch. I have just finished making some from muslin double thickness. I wet them at change time so they're nice and warm.

So much nicer and easier than those disposable huggies one

I used something similar for my wipes - it was more like gauze than muslin too. I did it 4 layers thick (in half, then half again) and overlocked it. Mine are one side cotton velour, one side printed flannelette. For about 30 wipes it cost me less than $20 in fabric.

I used two layers for the ones i made. Although i think it was double muslin (does that exist?)

Tastic i made muslin ones and zigzaged around the edge, did it on quite a small stitch. We dont have an overlocker either. They have been going for 6months now and still going strong.

I keep mine dry and then just wet at the sink before nappy change and then they go in the bucket with the dirty cloth nappy. Mainly because i dont have the time to put them all into a box lol. I have a question about washable wipes, do you keep them dry hen just wet as you need or keep them in water or what?
also could you just zigzag around the edge? I made baby wipes from flannel material I did 2 layers and then overlocked. I would still only do 2 layers with muslin too. Man we so need a sub forum for all this creative stuff!

I got some baby muslin for making wipes with instead of terry towel - massive price difference for a start. Has anyone made wipes from this? I'm wondering how many layers I should be putting together. I'm going to overlock around the edges, but yea. Suggestions? :D
