So here is an update for the next poor mum to deal with this.

DD still thinks its yuck, but I think she now associates it with feeling better, and she is super curious about life and likes to investigate everything via mouth. So the latest dosing involved her holding the syringe herself and pulling it towards her mouth whilst gulping it down with only maybe 20% spillage, and once it was all gone I had to fight her to get the syringe back

It's a world away from where we were, and whilst I admit we are going back to the docs on tuesday for an option that works on the reflux, the actual dosing with gaviscon becomes pretty easy after a while.

    Author: MARY
Subject: 32599
Posted: 09 April 2010 at 12:03pm

Hi, my baby boy had silent reflux and he was on gaviscon up to six times a day, because I was breastfeeding exclusively too. Yup, it was a nightmare getting it into him, and I lived in fear of him missing a dose.

Like two people said above, I would mix it down with only 5mls of water and used a dropper to get it in. But I was only successful 80% of the time, and it was a real battle at 3am feeds.

So ... we were reluctant to put him on ranitidine, but within three days of him taking it I took him off the gaviscon and he became a "textbook" sleeping baby. I now wish I had started him on it sooner, but we had to wait to see a specialist, so he started on it when he was nearly three months old ... he's 19 months now and still on two doses, one in the morning one at night, but I will start weaning him off it soon. (He loves the taste of it now, he say's "yum yum" after he has it!).

Hope this helps!

I went back to my GP and asked her for Losec which I only had to give him once a day. I made up some stewed pear and gave him a tiny amount on a spoon with the losec granules sprinkled onto it and he took it no problem. Once he started on solids properly I just gave him the Losec with his breakfast every morning and by seven months he had grown out of the reflux.

Good luck amd I hope this helps :o)

He did take a dummy though so that probably made it easier. Oh and I only mixed it up with 10mls of water not 15 and gave it at the beginning of the feed (even though the instructions say the end) so he was starving and guzzled it down. Hope that helps.

I gave up and asked my dr for losec. Stronger but you only have to give 2ml!

When I was trying to force my ds to take gaviscon, I would mix it with less water (only 5ml like EsmesMum), syringe it in at the start of the feed, and force him to swallow. It was horrid and he always cried!

I'm also giving it to her before a feed which seems to be helping. She won't take a bottle either which makes it hard.
She is supposed to have 2 sachets which is near impossible so I'm trying 1 sachet at a time and will up the dose to 2 when she is used to it. It does seem to be helping though. Only one upset/grizzly time today and only one sleep which I had to help her get to sleep with. She was not impressed and I don't think I got much into her

For those that don't know, I have to give her 15 mL at a time, 6 times a day, ideally just after her big feeds. It's essentially a basic solution, to counter the acid in her reflux and her face says it tastes terrible

So, any ideas how to get this into her? She won't take EBM from a bottle, so I doubt she'll take this horrible stuff. I think I'm going to have to hold her down and syringe it into her, but that breaks my heart to do that. Especially bearing in mind I'm lucky to get 5 hours of sleep in total most nights - my day started at 1am today, so life isn't much fun for either DD or I, and the last thing I want to do is fight with her
