It varies here, DH's family aren't big on things like that, so it's taken a while for him to come around. Usually I have to prompt him too, it's just not an important day in his mind.

This year (my birthday being this Friday) I have told him from 3 weeks out about my bday (he's away so he needed to get my present in advance lol). I then transferred money into his spending account so he had no excuse on not buying me a pressie.

Ah Kaiz - my 30th last year - it took DH about an hour to remember it was actually my birthday!

He did cook me whatever I wanted for dinner that night though

My ex was really awesome the first year we were together, but after that it was horrendous. Four years in a row he picked a fight with me the night before my birthday so he could ignore me for the entire day and feel justified in his own head for not getting me a present. Hell, not just no present - not even a 'happy birthday'!!

Of course, he got totally spoilt every year.

This thread is making me feel very high maintenance ... yes, I choose my presents (cos I'd never be happy with what he chose for me, LOL), but it's is my one chance in the year to spurge on something that I wouldn't buy otherwise. This Sunday it's my birthday and I'm getting an artwork from DH and some beautiful fabric and a book from DD. Oh and we happen to be picking up a new puppy on my birthday too

I put it down to the fact that DH's family doesn't really celebrate anything - birthdays or Christmas really. This year I didn't even get a homemade card from the kids and I had had about 3 texts from my family (we were out of town) before he said "oh yeah suppose I should say Happy Birthday". I did get a cooked breakfast but that was because we had gone out of town to visit his Nana and my Grandma and I had arranged the hotel making sure it had a cooked breakfast.

I have to say though that when he does buy me a gift that I haven't hinted at heavily they are really great. Xmas was a digital photo frame and years and years and years ago (for my 16th I think) he got me a beautiful Parker pen that was engraved. Presents like that are wonderful.

Actually in fairness though I didn't budget for birthday pressies for him or me this year but I did budget for Mothers and Fathers Day

okay, my hubby is wonderful, but CRAP when it comes to presents. About seven years ago, he asked me "what do you want", i said "nothing' when in reality I meant "I want you to show how much you love me by buying me a truly meaningful gift".   then he got me nothing. and I sulked. We now have an agree4ment.

I arrange in the budget enough money to get me gifts...everytime. then i make a list about what I want. Man, I wish I never started this thread as it just made me feel sorry for myself haha! I told DH it hasn't been such a great day, apparently he did the lunch dishes before work, so that was his way of making my birthday great. YAY!!!

I've just cracked open a bottle of wine so that should keep me happy, I might just leave the dinner dishes for him when he gets home at 11.30pm, since it was my birthday treat and all

My DH is really good - and I never give him the opportunity to forget since I make a huge fuss about my birthday month, birthday week etc. This year is our first on one income, so it'll be a bit different - I've asked for a haircut somewhere nice and for him to make a nice dinner (not one of our 20minute ones that we do during the week!). What a great day for birthdays, it's mine today too

I feel very spoilt, although I did hint about this months ago. DH and Callum bought me a Nikon digital SLR, I have been wanting a "real" camera forever and my present to myself () is going to be a photography course, just 5 lessons but I'm really excited!

DH generally does pretty well with gift buying but sometimes he slacks off on finding a nice card. The selection here is RUBBISH and hard to find and unlike me he won't make anything so I got a card (with a lovely message!) for our anniversary yesterday but nothing for my birthday. My DH is pretty good , he likes to buy me things , jewellrey or whatever , tho my fave present is always a book that I can pretend im gonna get around to reading )
But if he cant cos finances are low, he makes me something,hes pretty clever with the old Photoshop .
For christmas this year he made me an awesome collage of us and the kids (which I put on here )
and for my birthday he did one of the two of us .

Wow, my man must be one of the unusual ones then! He totally spoils me at every birthday and we always go out dinner on our birthdays. He just finds the most awesome gifts for me, last year he got me an iPhone, I was very stocked!!!

I however am the one that is useless in this house

Happy Birthday!

I get nothing, yep nothing! What makes it even worse is he will say "What do you want baby?" I normally can't think of anything and part of that is because if I need something then I have always got it myself I've worked therefore have had the money although I don't now So he usually says that he was thinking of getting me this this or this and I think ok cool. But what I actually get is a big fat NAHP. We dont even go out for dinner, I think the last time we went out for dinner actual dinner was our Anniv two years ago and thats because I said he HAD to take me out for dinner. I told him the only thing I wanted was for him to take me out for a nice meal and a few drinks. Ok so I drank a bottle of champagne on my own haha. Last bday DD was 3.5mths old and we ended up at mum and dads for BBQ which is what I wanted and he bought meat wholesale through work. Xmas I got the I'll get you something I was thinking of a massage which I would LOVE but no. He even asked my SIL to recommend somewhere

I have already bought him his bday present, ok so its only a tshirt but he doesn't know I have bought it and I have to hide it until May

DH & I share our birthdays which means he can never forget, lol. He is usually pretty good at getting me a little something, though we usually have to talk about how much $ we are allowed to spend on each other and whether there is something in particular we would appreciate (he's not so good at coming up with ideas on his own even after being together for 11 years ). We've also got into the habit of each taking the kids to a $2 type shop and letting them pick out 1 thing for each of us.

well my partner and i have only been together 4 months so we havent had birthdays together yet , for christmas we had only been officially together like a 2 or 3 weeks so i bought him a cd that i had seen him mention from an add on tv and he bought me a $50 westfield mall voucher  and a really nice card saying i HAVE to spend the money on myself because i work so hard , and hes also randomly bought me flowers a few times which is always a lovely suprise . we are already planning a combined birthday party for sept ( as our birthdays are a week apart ) so that should be fun , will be nice to share our birthdays

I get absolutely nothing. Last year we went out for tea (and he didn't even want to go), mainly because the nurses in Neonatal told him he had to, because we wouldn't get another chance for a while. I got more from the nurses than I did from DH (they got me a bunch of flowers and some footprints from the girls and also a cake). I have never got a birthday or Christmas present from him. I will usually get a happy birthday and a kiss and that's about it. The year before, his MUM made me dinner because my mum was away, and it was a tradition that for our birthdays my parents took us kids either to a restaurant of our choice, or Mum cooked our favourite meal (for me, usually roast lamb).

He has always got a birthday/Christmas present from me, and last year even got a Father's Day present - nothing big (a mug with "No 1 Dad" on it) but ya know what, I had to brave town with 5 week old twins just to get it, and I think that was the biggest thing - the thought and effort that goes into it without getting anything in return.

this year DH didnt get me anything until the week after my birthday (farmers voucher) and a card but i didnt have anything on my birthday....was pretty disappointed!

usually hes pretty good though.

Sucks when men are dumb! My ex-husband was the dumbest of the dumb. One year he gave my best friend $100 to buy me a xmas gift because he claimed he didn't know what I wanted. Then he was out and about and saw a gift that he thought my best friend would really like so he brought it and wrapped it and put it under the tree. I had no idea it was for her, so kinda assumed he had actually put some thought in to xmas that year. When xmas morning rolled around and he gave me an assortment of gifts brought by my friend - Poo bear bathroom mats, candle holder and a video cassette of the Scorpion King I was a bit baffled to say the least. But was I LIVID with him when I saw the dragon statue he had picked out for my best friend! And all he could say was 'but it only cost $30 - I spent $100 on you!' He just didn't get it. The next year he spent $2000 on jewelery and a cell phone that we could not afford and landed us in even more debt. Needless to say why we are now divorced. I always get a card with some nice poems and words. It is such a beautiful keepsake and I have them all together in a little wooden box.
When it comes to presents...., well that's a different story. He hasn't for the past four years... every year he asks me what I want, I tell him nothing, so I get nothing. He will tell me to go and buy myself something, which usually ends up being foundation because I need it anyway.

This year I actually TOLD him what I wanted. A facial. This was a few weeks ago. Last week he checked the budget and said we couldn't afford it, so he would get me something in a few weeks when we can.

I guess I am just a bit upset because every year when it comes to his birthday, he always makes sure there is room in the budget for his present.. Last year there wasn't, so I found money and bought him a necklace that he'd been wanting for ages.. took him out for breakfast and the kids made him a card.

I very much doubt he has got me anything.. I would have been stoked with even a note or a message to say why he loved me or something!!! Hes leaving for work at 2pm and will be home at 11.30pm..

DH always gives me something nice for my birthday and a card, I do the same for him. Sometimes I get it after work when I get home sometimes first thing in the morning before I get up. I like buying nice things for DH.

I'm having to slowly train DH up. He didn't believe in giving stuff for xmas and birthdays. Our first Christmas together, I handed him his present and he said he didn't get me anything (he actually hadn't, he paid for that for a LOOOONG time) So he's learnt his lesson with birthdays and christmas haha!!!

Last year for my birthday, we moved into our house and I got to spend the day using the rug doctor. Woo!! Haha. But we went out for tea which was really nice. I'm making it a tradition that we're always gonna go out for dinner for each others birthdays. AND presents. Doesn't have to be something big! Last year he got underwear, canterbury shorts and some polo shirts he needed for work. This year he gets a baby (I'm due on the 9th, his bday is the 12th. DH normally asks me what I would like and if I can't think of anything he will surprise me with different gifts. They are usually things I love because he knows what I like. And he takes me out for dinner.
