Otautahi Tattoo are awesome. DH has had a lot of work done at Southern Ink but a few years ago they were better. One of his mates brothers used to work there but doesn't anymore so he goes elsewhere.

I get so many comments about it and even my tattoo artist hadn't done one before and took photos after it was done

Ive got a few, my fav is the one on my back, goes down my spine with stars and the kids names in the top stars. still need to get it finished though.

I have 3 - two aztec symbols (one on my shoulder blade, one on my hip) and a gecko on the top of my hip / butt. I got all of mine when I was young, between 18-20yrs old, and I love them, they were meaningful for me at the time. I have one on the left side of my stomach (as I was NEVER going to have a baby. Ha ha!), and the part on the ribs was sooo painful, but the rest was ok. I've only the one, it is on my hand, running from between my thumb and forefinger up my arm.. it is a tamoko, representing my daughter, me and my husband and our respective families.. DH got another at the same time running up his arm to his ear, about five times the size of mine - but he's a pro, I just started out small!

I'm getting another continuing up my arm wrapping around to my elbow in the next few months. I decided to get on on my hand/arm because I figured why hide it, and I figured it's a spot that isn't going to sag/stretch and look haggard in my old age (Well I blimmin well hope not anyway!)

The pain is definetly bearable - not exactly pleasant but not bad at all.. go for it! I have 8, planning to get #9 soon - they all vary in size and location... top of my arm, across the top of my back, both sides of my lower back, both inner ankles.

I have 3 tattos but my fave is definaty my one for my daughter ( the other 2 i got when i was 16 and 17 and there fine but i didnt put much thought into them and they were more just a rebelious thing however my tattoo for Amelia i put alot of thought into and drew up exactly what i wanted before goinginto the tattoo shop . i personally dont find tattoos to be overly painful but in saying that my 3 are resonably small , i wouldnt like to sit in the chair for hours on end as its not all that comfortable , just like a sharp scratching feeling that starts to feel a bit burny after a while , its nice when they spray it with solution

this is my tattoo only a few hours old , so its still very fresh and red , it healed reall fast mind you . it says : Daughters are angels sent from above to fill our hearts with unending love and its in the middle of my back (im not a fan of lower back so went for the middle so i can easily hide it )

I have four chinese symbols on my lower back that translate to sisterhood, had it done on the first anniversary of my sisters death so is very special to me.
Had planned on getting another one in June last year but seen as found out i was pregnant at the beginning of June, it didnt happen.
Will be getting a second one this year hopefully.

To me it felt like being scratched with a hot needle - kind of a slight burning pain with a scratch. But bearable.
Will take note of the lady in hamilton though - i had my first one done down there (cant remember his name - but he was great)

I want one for DD, just not idea what I want for the longest time I have wanted an angel as I have an obsession with them, and a huge collection. Meh we'll see.

One thing that I only found out this week is that a tribal design on the small of the back is apparently called a tramp stamp(no offence to anyone that has one). Only reason I found out is because DP was telling me about two of the girls he works with he was making fun of them as he does and told a workmate and instantly the guy called them a tramp stamp. It might be something in their circle but I don't know

Desribing tattoo pain is a bit like trying to describe labour lol. Yep it hurts, but its bearable, more berable than labour thats for sure!!!

I have 4 tattoo's, 2 on my lower back, a biggish one and a small one above it, and I have one next to my shoulder blade, and my new one

I have a sunflower at the bottom of my back, 3 butterflys which go down my back each one represents one of my children, then their are 5 stars around them which I got for my husbands and my 5th wedding anniversry this year and then a latin phrase on my calf which says she flies with her own wings.

I have the chinese symbol on my arse (on the side) i got it there as i got it for me and wanted it somewhere that i could cover. its the symbol for hope, original i wanted faith but i didnt actually like the look of it

for me it was SO painful (Im a wimp havent been through childbirth yet!) but the guy doing it was really good and understanding. in saying that i plan to get another one (a little one with my DPs name and when we have them my kids names)

i second what Mum2Mac said look into a shop before you get it done as if the guy doing mine wasnt so understanding (and nice!) i dont think i want have been able to get my finished (again im a wimp!)

I've got a small one on my shoulderblade. It is definitely a bearable pain... a bit sting-y but really minimal.

I'm in Wellington and went to Roger's on Cuba Street. I'm pretty sure he is highly regarded, as I was on a waiting list for over a month to get mine done there (by Roger).

I can't remember exactly how much I paid, but I think it was in the region of $150 - $180. And yes, that was for a pretty small (black only) one. You get what you pay for, I think!

And it was very quick. I have five little tattoos. One on the inside of my wrist, one a ring around a finger, 1 beside my belly button, 1 under neath my belly button, and one on my shoulder.

The one on the inside of my wrist hurt the most. It definitely is a tolerable pain.
I got a few of mine done by a guy called Brett Campbell. He is a mate, and has won quite a few awards.

I have a few... it's NOTHING like childbirth! No way does it hurt that much!! It's a pain that is tolerable... I reckon it's like what it would feel like to have a lit cigarette moving slowly across the skin. From what I've heard the ribs are the most painful area, none of mine have been unbearable (wrist, top half of arm, back of neck and lower back). To be honest I find the healing more annoying than getting the tattoo!

You tend to pay by how many hours work is involved, most tattooists will charge an $80 - $120 minimum for small tattoos

I second that it's an addiction!! Hmmmm bit worried about the pain thing...yeah I've given birth but that f&%*n hurt  and I had an epi halfway through anyway so I kind of cheated  I was thinking either the small of my back or my shoulderbone...guess the closer to the bone the more painful?

Also, anyone know anywhere GOOD in Wellywood to get it done? And how much does it cost for something small?

I have my entire back done. Plus 3 smaller ones, 1 on my lower back, one on the back of my neck and one under my left arm.



What it feels like...cutting yourself shaving. Or ya know when you get sunburnt and you scratch it...it feels like that so very bareable.
And mate, if you can give birth, you can get a tat!

Anywhere with bone near the surface will hurt more than those nice fatty covered areas.

Nadine Bryant at Skinks in Hamilton is Australiasias top female tattooist. She did my back and under my arm and they are awesome tats. I found being a female she had a gentler hand.
The other two I have were done by a male. It could also be his skill level, but they are nowhere as good as Nadines and they hurt more.

Dean Holland in Waihi is also freakin' awesome. DP has a back piece done by him.

The above two tattooists are great with fine detail as well.

Definately go looking at different shops. Look for hygenie first of all. Also look for the friendliness and helpfulness of the team. Tattoos, as I am sure you're aware, are permanent so you need to make sure you have the best team looking after you.
If it's a big piece thats going to take longer than an hour, and if you're no good with pain, ask if they will allow you to break it up into separate sittings.
I personally could only handle an hour at a time, it took 16 hours to do my back, almost 2 years to complete.

Just beware, they are an addiction. It is incredibly hard to stop at one. I have full intentions of getting many, many more.

Oh and another thing, get something original, don't pick anything off the net or out of a book. With my piece on my back, I took my tattooists some "base" ideas for the tigers, she copied the outline of them, and the rest of it was all done freehand. The tattooist you choose should be able to do this for you and if they "can't" find another tattooist cause IMO their skill level is obviously low if they can't do anything but copy.

I haven't, although DH has a lot. I do plan on getting one done in August though once my weightloss is complete.

It'll be right down my right side of my ribs, a calla lilly with a french phrase as the stem and the kids names in the petals, and DH's celtic wedding band around the base of the petals. According to DH I should feel a lot of buzzing, like a blunt pencil, but shouldn't be too bad. Looking forward to it.

I have a small one on my left ankle - Japanese characters that say 'tenshi' (or translated 'angel' so pretty much my name). I got it done after living in Japan for 18mths and it was a profound time for me - hehe as my mum says, I grew up A LOT while I was there.

It stung a little as the work was done near the tendon that runs up that part of your leg, but nothing major.

im tempted to get one somewhere discreet of a daisy chain , except i'll have the kids names linking the daisys wtih a couple of butterflies around .
I don't know if I will tho , i keep saying I will , then I forget about it .

Any of you have tattoos? I'm *thinking* about getting one with Clodaghs name but would like to hear some feedback/ stories about where you got one, why there and how it was actually getting one done(seeing as I hate pain lol)
