Before it was always bottle then solids then I switched breakfast around and lunch has just followed naturally. I have always given him dinner at 6pm and a bottle at bedtime.

7.30 am Solids
8.30 am Bottle
12 noon Solids
1-1.30pm Bottle
4pm-ish Snack (sometimes bottle, sometimes solids)
6pm Solids
8pm Bottle

I have noticed that his bottles after breakfast and lunch are down to about 150ml and his night time bottle still needs to be about 250ml.

I think the main thing is to pay attention to bubs needs and don't be too strict - sometimes they will just want a bottle.

Good luck!

He never finishes a full 200ml bottle though so he's probably only getting 600mls per day despite being offered 800mls.

Currently he has:

6am bottle
7am breakfast
10am bottle
10:30am morning tea
11:30am lunch
2pm bottle
5pm dinner
6pm bottle then bed.

I don't know how to go about changing any of this as he's so structured in his routine. Maybe I could start by cutting out his 2pm bottle and giving him a more substantial afternoon tea & water? Is this how its done?

Started with having dinner at 5-5.30pm and then a feed at bedtime 6.30-7pm. Then started giving him lunch first a couple of weeks later, so he has lunch about 11.30-12pm and a feed before he goes down for his afternoon sleep. He still has a BF first thing in the morning and then breakfast around 8am, I don't see that changing any time soon as DH gets him up when he gets up for work and brings him to me in bed to feed so I don't have to get up straight away! and about a month ago he dropped his mid afternoon feed in favour of a snack and water.

I talked to Plunket about it first, and they just said whatever works. The girls still have a full bottle after about half a jar of solids, so yeah.

At the moment it's bottle then breakfast, then lunch about 11.30am and bottle straight after, then dinner and bottle around 4-4.30pm (depending on them). They have a bottle just before bed as well.

ETA: They are FF as well.

Edited by minik8e

There is no rush, especially if you are both happy with how things are for the moment - it also sounds like he is really good at communicating his needs to you (and you understanding them), so if you give it a couple weeks more he might show you he is ready to switch another one of his feeds around and you can go from there.

With DD2 so far none of her solids feeds really come before her milk feeds yet as she is still fully breastfed, but we are doing a lot of things differently with her than we did with DD1 - all feeds / sleeps / snacks on demand etc.

    Author: mummymonster
Subject: 32337
Posted: 18 March 2010 at 9:27am

DS is FF. I just noticed that the plunket guidelines say that from 8mths he should have solids then milk.
He's on 4 bottles a day and he's already moved his before dinner bottle to after dinner (doesn't speak but somehow gets his own way). Breakfast and lunch he has his bottle first, and the 3pm(ish) feed doesn't come with food at all ATM.
I can see that I'll be introducing a snack at 3, and that can be before his bottle.

As for breakfast & lunch we've got a rhythm going and I can't imagine doing it the other way round.

He doesn't feed overnight at all, so his morning bottle is much appreciated, then we have toast together. I think if I faffed with breakfast before feeding him I'd have a riot on my hands.

He's really hungry by 11 so has a bottle, then I get solids ready and we have lunch together. He's just about to start daycare and they have lunch at 11:30 too, so I don't really want to mess that up and I don't think he could last till 11:30 without the bottle at 11.

How did other mum's switch the milk /solids order?
