If you do decide to go to Milford Sound you could always consider staying the night there. That way you could take your time driving in and out and you could go on a cruise first thing in the morning or one of the last ones of the day. Also Real Journeys do overnight cruises which are magical. It is fantastic to be out on the Fiord as the sun goes down and hearing all the night noises and seeing so many stars. There is only one place to stay on land and thats at the Milford Lodge.

I worked and lived in Milford Sound for a year and saw it in all it's glory and would agree that a rainy is great for seeing the waterfalls but if you want to be able to see the tops of the mountains then a fine day is the best time to go.

Ok I could go on about MIlford all night , so will stop now. Oh Doubtful is also brillant. And it is possible to do the whole of the South Island in two weeks. The Bay of Islands!! (hehehe Im a bit biased!!). The weather here in November last year was gorgeous!!! And there is heaps of stuff to do

I absolutely love Queenstown too - it is beautiful there and there is heaps to do.

Queenstown, Queenstown, Queenstown

Absolutly beautiful spot - tourists LOVE it, amazing scenery theres activities theres shops just love the place.

We went there a couple of weeks ago for a night and it was amazing. Sitting in the spa outside looking out over the hills and the huge lake was amazing - best holiday ever!

Flying into Queenstown is also very magical.

If you have a search through here, I started a thread a while ago asking what to do in Queenstown and got some great answers.

Nelson! So so SOOOO beautiful! And they have the most amazing bead shop

Rotorua has lots of 'touristy' things to do

You could fly to Chch, then hire a campervan and spend two days cruising up towards Nelson, that way you could stop off in Kaikoura (stunning... seals are NOT friendly! hehe), go to Hanmer Springs, even go up past Nelson to Kaiteretere Bay and Abel Tasman Park. Then catch the ferry back across to Wellington! If you haven't been a trip to Waitomo Caves is well worth it, black water rafting is so much fun and an overnight stay in Ohakune in an old train carriage.

The central platau. At the moment it is off season so it is cheap to stay in Kune etc. You can go on the scenic smalls walks and if you want to shop go up to Taupo and Rotorua.

Well my best friend's Mum (from the UK) has just been to NZ on a 3 week holiday and she RAVES about Nelson (still). She love love LOVED it and she used to be a tour guide all round Europe/US as well

Great food, wineries on your door step, fun activities, beautiful walks and it's got fairly decent shopping too (not as good as Welly IMO but still some great local finds!)

Oh - another suggestion - we went to Paihia for 5 days on our last trip home to NZ and I loved it up there. We flew up to Auckland and hired a car, drove to Paihia and then explored all over for the next few days. That was REALLY interesting and I'm really glad we went there now. i like seeing scenery, do activities and shopping (DP likes it all too even the shopping!)

to be honest i think we want the kind of holiday you would recomend to someone coming from overseas. its a lot of fun being a tourist in your own country

we went a mystery break earlier in the year. got told the time to be at the airport then go told at the airport where we were going. Love Queenstown/Wanaka, Nelson area, central NI (Taupo/Rotorua) or Napier.

I've never been North of Auckland so can't personally recommend but that is where our next proper holiday is going to be to.

For 3 days I'd say either Nelson, Napier or Rotorua.

I'd go to Nelson or Blenheim/Marlborough if you want a 3 day holiday from Wellington. So much to see, hire a car and it's easy to get around the whole region or you can stay in the city and just explore Nelson itself. Or even take your car on the ferry although I think that's pretty pricey, for a 3 day trip you're probably better off hiring something once you're there!

I went to Nelson for a week and loved it - it is so beautiful. There are markets, and heaps of touristy places, Abel Tasman Park, heaps of wineries if you're into wine...I did a horse trek as well. I hired a holiday home for the week - just a studio - which meant I could cook whatever/whenever I wanted and didn't have to pay out as much as if I was eating out every night. DP and i are looking to go on holiday in november. we have been to Christchurch and Dunedin but dont know where to go next. We would be looking at going for 3ish days.

We are open to trying most things once and would really like to see more of our own country before we go overseas, as DP hasnt really travelled much

Oh and keep in mind that we dont have any kids (yet!)
