Its suprisingly good on gas, we haven't had to do anything but tyres, service, oil etc which you'd do on a normal car, and DH had to re-gas the air con unit (which when it's 20 years old I think is pretty damn good!)
So nothing you wouldn't do with another car anyways!

I LOVED it and we only really had airfow meter problems. We brought it stolen/recovered with minor damage from and insurance company and found it really cheap to fix as any parts we needed were easy to find cheap on trademe and DP is mechanic so never paid for any work to be done on it just minor panelbeating a mate in the trade fixed.

DP hates them tho and sold it on me and im still waiting on the toyota caldina he brought to replace it. All three have had nothing but problems. Not to mention they are insanely expensive to fix.

One of ours was just the coil that went, turns out they have 4 coils and you have to take them all out to test which one is faulty. $120ea brand new. They quoted us $600 to fix it. I replaced all four myself for $240

Sorry abit off track.

If you are wanting something reliable and economical, I would go with a toyota wagon. It is not too bad on gas - as automatic - and a really great car. We now have two children, one is 22 months and the other 8 weeks - and yet we still manage to fit everything in for trips away! Also wouldn't be without the permanent 4wd - such a different safety wise. Also it is one of the best cars to drive and comfort wise. Would definitely recommend. Have not had to do much more than replace tyres and service it since we got it 4 years ago.

Sooo comfy, spacious and in my opinion not really as thirsty as people make them out to be. On a full tank (around 60l) I'll do 550km and it hasn't let us down once, no probs with wof or anything else.
Now it's just time to get the cambelt done, so I'm guessing it will be expensive but can't get around that one anyway!

I would really recommend, just take care and don't buy a modified one or one that's been trashed.... A factory one is really mint!
