Becks there is a good vege shop in Terrace end now opposite Woolworths. I buy wherever I am & what I need, I don't make a special trip to a vege shop. If I shop at PNS I buy there but if I shop at Foodtown I will go to the vege shop nextdoor.

hey,
well we are rather lucky living in hawkes bay atm the fruit is just flowing in, in fact we have too much, free plums, apples, pears from ppl my MIL knows who work in the orchards and then they are really cheap at the supermarket atm. veges we normally get at the supermarket or from our garden (though atm the garden is seriously overgrown).

Farmers Markets!!! *slaps forehead with hands*! How could I forget those! I went to the local one y'day and got free range eggs and purple potatoes!

On our evening walks we have seen quite a few 'elderly' folk's gardens that have had the lawns converted into vege gardens - mainly potatoes - perhaps that's an idea for you Toni?

I can't wait to have our house built and live on our lifestyle block soon - when we had a 6 acre block a year ago we had a MASSIVE vege garden and did swaps with family and friends. Of course everyone of us had courgettes at the same time though LOL! I tend to write down whats on special at the supermarket than check out the fruit and veg shop... and then compare.

Normally we get all our fruit and veg at the fruit shop but occasionally we get from the supermarket if we have run out or they have a great special on.

Were I am living now supermarket. However when we move I will have my garden back again and will grow everything I can. Fruit I will have to get still from the supermarket or I can go for a drive and go to the fruit and vege stores down the main drag in Levin.

We grow most of our own vege, so I only buy red pepper, cucumber, avocado and sometimes mesclun if ours is a bit thin at the supermarket. I buy my fruit at New world, its always very fresh there or I go out to stalls/farmers markets. When I am up visiting mum in Auckland I always stock up on veges from the fruit shops as they are normally cheaper and better quality.

At home we only have stink New World to shop at so have to get our fruit and vege there. They do have some good prices for seasonal stuff eventually but potatos cost heaps.

Following on from the other thread about 'Butcher or Supermarket'...

Because I live rural, my fruit and veges were best sourced from Countdown or Woolworths because the turnover was quite high.

Now I work in Christchurch 3x days per week on average, and I go down a road that is just chocka full of market gardener stores.

The prices aren't much different, which surprises me. But the fruit and veges last longer, although they might look just the same. And I am able to visit twice a week (Mon, Thurs) so I just buy for a few days at a time.

In saying that, today I went to Woolworths and the apricots were superior to the vege store, I hadn't bought any at the vege store cause they were all so squishy and just about rotten!
