Fair enough... I just dont think I could pay all that money to have it be the OB's day off when you go into labour... Besides, I feel (and this purely a personal opinion) that the risk of intervention increases with a specialist.... just seem to be a trend I have noticed with those whom i know have used a private OB... Of course thats a gross generalisation.

To me a mw is a specialist... they are trained in antenatal and post natal care and labour and delivery...

I live in the south island, not anything like auckland. In the end, my MW was there after I got induced until things turned to custard. I heard from her the day before I was discharged again. My induction and later c-section were performed by the obstetrician on duty.

I think I'd more go with the hospital for accountability and knowing what to expect.

peace of mind i think mel and also the extra scans are very enticing!

Personally I am happy with a mw. I ended up shared care via the hospital due to Jake having IUGR and i saw the same OB at every appt (she ran clinic at the hospital weekly) and she came to do my post op even though she didnt do my section as she was my assigned OB... I will happily do the same again...hopefully we wont need it.

Is there a medical reason you need OB care or is it for peace of mind?

I was given shared care with the hospital and my independent MW.

If I was doing it again I'd go with full hospital care for what would probably be another high risk pregnancy. As I had frequent specialist appointments and antenatal clinic appointments I think my MW felt that she didn't have to meet with me at all in the last trimester. I didn't trust her much for the labour and didn't feel heard at all. JMHO and experience. Other MW's may handle the shared basis better.

I think it depends on how much your MW wants to be involved as well.

Hi everyone, I went to see the ppl at Shore Birth today with the option of Shared Care with my Mw in mind, however we also discussed Full care and its not that much more expensive so now i cant decide which is better!

I would love to hear from ladies who have gone for either option or even both and what you thought about it
