Kate, I have a course of CD's teaching French...the guy teaches in a manner that get's you to 'know' the language rather than just listen and repeat (although it is very much listen and repeat to some extent!). It draws on the similarities between English and French - the way that with many words it is a matter of pronunciation. (The word pronunciation is a classic example in fact).

The local libraries have books and tapes etc you can borrow. Only thing is you can't hire them for too long. You can buy them from bookstores like Borders, but they're usually about $100.

Have you learnt a language before? You could learn one through the correspondence school of NZ. I did a correspondence course through them and it was really great, they send you all the material as you need it, you can call them up for help, and it's nzqa. Adult students over 20 pay $100 a course... I have some Learn French CD's and workbooks you can get from the book stores.

DD has a friend who is homeschooled and they have learned French through books/CD's. Then she went to a homeschool French language class and she prefered that. She said it was better as you could get the accent right and learn to speak it better. Now that I have a sleeping baby I have time for myself! I am thinking of learning a language- maybe french? Where so I start? I dont think I want to commit to classes and I dont think there would be many (if any) options where I live so maybe book/tape combo. Has anyone had experience with learning a language like this? any reccomendations?
