my girl was born within days of your lad Monikah and was a reflux bubba too

Until Xmas day actually if you gave her anything other than super smooth puree there would be hideous gagging where her eyes rolled back in her head and all the rest of the drama

Oddly on Xmas day it was like she just snapped out of it - and since she has been going from strength to strength with her eating!

I have no idea what solved it other than time so i hope your boy is the same and matures into being able to eat lumps.

I've just been reading a thread about reflux kids on another forum and kept thinking of you - talking about reflux babies having lots of difficulties with changes in textures, that the developmental changes and diet changes all happening at the same time can increase the reflux, and that the different textures they're starting to explore can cause pain on the oesphagus so more feeding problems ..... Chloe just choked and gagged on every single thing that wasn't smoothly pureed until about ten months. It wasn't until about a year that she was eating toast and lumpy things like all the other kids. But she only turned blue once, normally she would bring up the lump of food (and everything else too) - this was just about every meal! She had a mega gag reflex.

At this point, I'd say do what you need to do till you get him checked out. Give him what he can handle, don't worry about eating like you do - it will come. It might come soon or it might take a bit longer but at the moment, go with what he's telling you.

In terms of the choking, it may be a developmental/behavioural thing, possibly related to the reflux, or there may be a medical/anatomical reason. I don't know enough about kids swallowing to go into more detail, and even if I did, it should be something your GP or a paeds feeding specialist discussed with you when they'd seen Mack.

doctor is closed so will have to wait til monday. his reflux isnt too bad i dont think. he was only on meds for the pain cos it was burning his throat but he has never been a power chucker and doesnt cause him any pain so took him off the ranitadine at about 5 months with no problems. he is on thickened formula and always has been, he still spills alot after every feed even if it is hours after. he never coughs the food up on his own, we dont normally have him so bad we have to tip him upside down and whack it out but we often have to give him a few pretty hard smacks on the back to get it back up. he still spills water if you try give it to him. ummm, cant think of what else. what could possibly be wrong that would casue that though. its really annoying. i never wanted to have him eating different food from us but its just too horrible trying to give him anything else cos you are on the edge of your seat the whole time. ive put him on jar food for a few days to see what happens and im only using stage 2 cos he has never choked on that, its the only way to keep me from being really freaked out. im still giving him weetbix and yogurt/banana and other adult food. just not dinner cos i want him eating veggies like we do]]> Wed, 06 Jan 2010 20:07:27 +0000 https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=30792&PID=887804&title=choking-what-to-feed#887804 https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=30792&PID=887584&title=choking-what-to-feed#887584 Author: kiwisj

I was going ask if he has reflux as my friends DD does this (at a year) and we are wondering if she has reflux. She's been better since eliminating dairy so maybe that is an option?

I'd definitely be getting him checked to make sure there's nothing going on medically. sorry just re-read your post, I think getting it checked would be a good idea - our DD never went blue, once was kinda really choking but it didn't take much force to get the food up.

I was going to ask if he was choking or just gagging as gagging is ok and normal...but turning purple doesnt sound like something I'd be happy with. Get him checked out just to be sure.

Doctor for sure. At least then you know where you stand! And I'm a BLW fan too, Hollie point blank stopped eating any food so with advice from people on here I gave it a go and now she eats anything and everything thats put in front of her with no issues

We are doing BLW as well. At the start DS often got things stuck in his throat but he would always manage to cough it back up. Only once has he actually choked on a piece of courgette and even then he managed to cough it up after a few secs. I would highly reccommend BLW.

But apart from that I would say take him to the doc just incase it is something. Mon I would be inclined to take him to the GP... Could there be an obstruction? Jake was referred to a paed due to his gagging as they thought he might have webbing across his throat and the paed said unless he turns blue its not of concern. So based on that I would be taking him in.

Jake would gag on lumpy food and milk/food coming back up but he didnt choke to that extent. He went through a phase where jar food was all he would eat (to my dismay).

my baby is nearly 8 months old and chokes quite a bit. he cant go near toast, or banana (unless really mashed), grated cheese and everything else plunket reckons babies should be able to eat from 7 months. his dinner is still really mashed up with small lumps in it, but 2nite he somehow even managed to choke on that. not the normal choke then smack on the back type choking, but he couldnt get it up, turned purple choking. he was purple for ages and i finally managed to get him to hack it up my tipping him dam near upside down face to the ground and absolutely whacking him on the back. im bloody surprised he isnt hurt from it to be honest. but the food he has was hardly lumpy at all! i dont know what to do with him or what to feed him,

he has weetbix mushed with warm water for bfast and at the moment mashed banana with yogurt mixed in for lunch. i really dont wanna resort to jar food as i have made his food from scrach since he started solids but i dont know what to feed him anymore, he just cant seem eat it.

do i need to get him checked out since he cant eat normal food or do i just get jar food stage 2 for a while?
