The swelling seems to have gone down in there since all the bleeding etc and we've had no more today. We went to the dr and have started antibiotics and i'll start figuring out how to get him checked out by a dentist. We are in the middle of moving house so all is mayhem around here at the moment. If he has an absess this is very serious and warrants a visit to after hours, they can treat it with antibiotics and get him seen urgently by a hospital dentist.

In August this year DD, who was on the waiting list for dental surgery, had an absessed tooth.  She had been complaining of pain and had trouble sleeping (she was living on nurofen to get a full nights sleep) and then on the friday night her face swelled up like she had elephantitis.  We already had a script for abs and got this filled which helped and then on the monday I rang the hospital dentist and was told off for not having her seen straight away at after hours.  By Wednesday we were in hospital having the tooth dealt with. 

This was all done through the public hospital so we weren't charged.

Thanks guys, i'll phone our gp surgery tomorrow and see what they say. Then maybe phone around dentists. taine had problems with his teeth - ended up having an infection. we rang the hospital who directed us to the emergency dentist. they gave him antibiotics.

Not all dentists do the free treatment for under 18 , that comes under the GDB scheme , from 13 to 18, its government funded , but some dentists don't do it .
The free treatment for under 18s is the SDB scheme ,again not all do this , but when you ring and enquire they will tell you .
For something like this, I would bypass the dental nurse and see the doctor first (since they are definetly free-) and then the dentist if it is teeth related .

It is free for under 18's to see the dentist so ring around a few places and see how you get on. Dentists can prescribe antibiotics for that kind of thing so I would get on to it ASAP, sounds nasty and painful. My 20 mo toddler has been getting his molars through and one of them has been really swollen and had some ?pus around it. TBH it's hard to see as he doesn't let me look but it doesn't look right in there at all.

Then a few days ago this blood and pus came out of his mouth and since then every time he sleeps more blood and pus comes out and he wakes up crying.

He has never been to the dentist or dental nurse and i'm not sure who i should take him to see i.e. the dr or the dentist? And is that funded or not? Plunket gave me a form months ago for him to see the dental nurse but it is holidays so i doubt they'll be operating. Has anyone had to take their toddler to a dentist or had something similar?
