That's lovely Nikki. It's so nice to hear about how far Jacob has come, thinking back to when he arrived and you had no idea what the future would hold. Just look at him now! He's proven what a strong little fighter he is and you're an amazing mum.

I thought I’d update this post for those of you who were following our story. Jacob is now a 2 year old!!!!!

Wow, 2 years old!!! Onwards and upwards! Its been a long year, Jacob was meant to have his full heart repair back in February, he finally had it in November. There has certainly been no looking back since then. He is now almost walking, almost eating and drinking enough so we can take his feeding tube out That’s the next challenge. But I know we’ll get there. We’ve been up to Starship three times this year, one cardiac cath, one MRI and his open heart surgery. Apart from his heart surgery, we were only in our local hospital once with a bacterial infection in his lungs – not bad for a little one which such complex medical problems

Jacob is a little boy who has such a strong will, real spunk, a fun loving personality and a smile that captures your heart. He certainly gives his brother a run for his money. I now know that if Jacob sets his mind on something, then there will be no stopping him.

I’m the proudest mum ever, proud of my little fighter, proud of my family and proud of my husband – we’ve made it! We’ve survived the two hardest years of our lives. We are so excited about the future and are now making plans - because we can!

Once again, thank you for all of your support. Especially the October 07 girls, you guys rock!

Awww that brought tears to my eyes. Having spent far too much time in hospital with my wee one in the past year (and yet no where near the time you've spent in various ones) I can go some way to imagining what it must be like for you. Stay strong and may your boy have a happy and enjoyable life .

I know this is very personal for an open forum, but just wanted to share this with those of you who have shared this journey with us.


"What an incredible journey you have lead us on, there has been so many highs and so many lows, but what a relief that you have now reached one!

We were told to take things ‘hour by hour’ when you were born at 26 weeks. But they did not see the fighter in you, who’d show them they’re wrong, our little miracle boy, who would thrive and grow strong.

So many tears were shed in the beginning. You looked so sick and fragile under the phototherapy lights in the incubator. Daunting wires and tubing everywhere. I had to wait 2 weeks to hold you. Too scared to move or to kiss your head, just trying to breathe in your baby scent.

Always hearing the words fragile…fragile…fragile…Then it was stable…stable….stable…. then ‘irreparable heart defect’, news to break anyone. Ventilator, CPAP, low flow, catherder study, laser eye surgery, three hospital transfers…home. 5 months of waiting to have you finally home.

Then back up to Auckland to hear amazing news, ‘confident of a full heart repair’! Woohoo! But you had to do things in Jacob style, falling extremely ill, 5 days in PICU. Fragile…fragile…stable…stable…then back home to Wellington hospital, back home again.

Who would have expected such a bright, smiley boy emerge from that tiny baby born far too early. How far you have come, how you have touched so many people, how you have taught us all so many life lessons. How have you managed to do all this in only one year?

Never will I take for granted being able to cuddle and kiss you whenever I want. Never will I take for granted having you home with us. And never will I take for granted having you in our lives.
