If you plan to take maternity leave, you must write to your employer at least three months before your expected date of birth.<br /><br />Unless MW or DR recommends early leave.<br /><br />]]>

You are allowed to take as much or a little as you want before the birth- as long as its only 14 weeks. I have to take all of mine before the birth as we moved from Greymouth to Nelson and it was the only way that i could still keep my entitlement through work. If you have any questions give the labour dept a ring (i think) and they can tell you straight up what you can and can't do. I had kept a copy of the form & faxed it from home & they did it there & then. I think they started it earlier for me also.<br /><br />If you get WFF then you can ring them the day baby arrives & they will start it straight away & then you have a few weeks to send the forms in & get an ird #]]>

It would only be something to think about if you wanted it to start earlier than your specified date and I think that would be possible too.]]>

I actually wanted to start my payments about six weeks after I had finished work as I had a couple of weeks annual and a pay in the mix - I think on the form it might state a start day and I think your boss has to sign the form on the date you finish.  I also submitted my forms a few weeks after she was born.  I'm pretty sure you can apply for your PPL payments anytime in that period - have a read thru the material.]]>
