Maybe, I might be expecting him to eat too much, but he is barely in the chair 5 minutes before he wants to get out.

Its probably all another delightful phase. We are also going through chewing things up and then pulling it out our mouthes, sometimes it goes back in and sometimes it ends up on the floor.

I think part of it, is at daycare he sits at a tiny table in a tiny chair like a real person and he does fine there.

So maybe the table is the way to go, he just gets so wriggly.

Hi, my bubs is about the same age. We do separate meals here - bubs has her dinner around 5.30 and we eat 9ish - mainly cause we are all getting home at that time. Lunch is about the only meal that is done regularly in the highchair (daycare during the week and with me at the weekends). We use the exersaucer still in the mornings and for dinner - she happily spins around or plays while eating - I think its not the best solution but it works! My little girl was like that in her high chair - such a naugghty monkey. I just didn't bother with it. When she was younger I would sit her on my knee or on the messy mat to eat her finger food and as she got bigger she joins us at the table now. I make a point of us all eating together.
During the day Mika and I eat together (lunch, morning tea, afternoon tea) and for dinner we wait for her dad. I have noticed that when we are all 3 together, that's when she eats the most.

She gets very fussy in her high chair if I don't sit down with her.

Can you not give him a little snack to tie him over so you can have dinner together?

I tend to let the girls eat away in the highchairs and I 'ignore' them by keeping busy in the kitchen. Ok so this really follows on from my other thread about food.

DS goes into highchair, acts like a starving animal, stuffs food in his mouth 2 or 3 times and then gets fussy and wants to get out. If I give him a toy or something he will calm down and then I can feed him, equally if I get him out and put the food on a plate on the floor he zooms around and then eats quite happily.

When I feed him, we are not eating at the same time, he needs dinner by 5, at which point i've just walked in the door from work and DH is not home. So wonder if that is part of the issue, do I just need to leave him to it and do something else.

Do you sit next to him or just leave him with his food and busy about close by?

Anytime he wee have food and he is playing he will come and have a bite very happily so I don't know if part of it is just not wanting to be sat still.

What do others do, does anyone else have this issue?
