TA - Yep you can use the Ergo for both front and back carries (and hip). WRX the inserts are for younger babies, usually up to 4months-ish. You use them to help support the baby's neck/head when they don't have good neck control in the beginning. From what I could see on the Ergobaby website there's not a heck of a lot of difference between the original and the new one.

Once Callum was "regular" newborn size, rather than a premmie, the Ergo was awesome. It is a Mei tai and does front/back and side carry. I found the slings very fiddly to start with aswell, but once I realized how easy it actually was I loved it, and they are very secure even if they dont feel as though they are.

I have tried slings in the past, but found them a bit fiddly and they didn't feel very 'secure'.

Looks like the ergo will be the way to go (for me). Just as well I posted this - I had never heard of them before!

Is anyone able to make any recommendations about model or retailer? I ideally want one that she can sleep in for as long as possible.

I had the BB Active which had additional support in the shoulders / back and it was fine until DS was about 4/5mths old, couldnt tell you what weight he was though probably slightly bigger than average.

It was fine for the early days but I have heard since that the the weight distribution (baby hanging from their crotch) isnt the best.

I regret that we had to stop using it when he got a bit bigger and had to use the buggy most of the time so if I were you I would look at your other options, so you get value for money.

I have just brought an Ergo myself and DS is now 16mths, he might be a bit independent now for it since he's not used to being carried anymore but technically its fine up til 20kgs plus and if there is baby number 2 in the future we'll use it full time.

I'll be selling my BB Active to help pay for the Ergo, I havent heard anyone who doesnt like their Ergo (except a friend that was under 5ft and her little boy kept smacking her in the chin with his head every time he looked around!!)

I was given a Baby Bjorn and I could only carry DD in it until she was about two months (it killed my back and shoulders).

The Ergo, on the other hand, is fantastic - I'm still using as a frontpack now, even though Clara is 16mths (and 12kg). A Moby or something like that would be good, I have a popit wrap which is basicly the same as the moby, they are super comfy for baby and mum.

I have heard bad things about the BB and Elite Cruisers, aparently they are not so good as all the weight is on the babys crutch, ouch!

I think if you were to get a BB you would be wasting your money. Other carriers (like the Ergo, which we have too and I ) will allow you to carry your baby for much longer (ie till they're a toddler) and they're comfier for you and bubs too.

My DS had reflux, our Ergo was a lifesaver and we're still using it now. I wouldnt waste money on a baby bjorn (and I wouldnt call it an upgrade from anything)

Not so much because of the age factor, just the product quality.

My girl is still carried and she is nearly two .. although not in a pack like an Elite Cruiser or a Baby Bjorn, I wouldnt put either of my children in one of those. before you buy any kind of carrier i would recommend you check out the slingbabies website. They have info on all sorts of slings, and front and back packs for carrying babies around...and of course lots of pics of diff baby wearing gears too! a really informative site that isnt trying to sell anybody anything, just inform. There is also an interesting article on positioning of babies in their carriers which you may find helpful.

oh and 6 mths isnt too old to be carried. My girl was being carried by my husband in our pack (an ergo) just a couple of months ago at the zoo and she is 20 months old!

What age did you use your front pack until?

I currently have a elite cruiser - which is ok (but not that comfy for either of us), but I am finding that I am using it heaps as DD has reflux and won't lie on her back in the pushchair etc. So I use it at playcentre and more often than not she has her last sleep of the day in it.

I am thinking of upgrading to a Baby Bjorn, but am wondering if I have left it too late and may be wasting my money.
