One day I switched to a straw sippy cup and as soon as he figured it out he was drinking 40 - 80ml in one go! So if you haven't tried it already, perhaps you could see if he'll drink more milk from a straw cup?

I think the milk "requirement" for 12mth and older is 500ml/day from all sources? (Someone correct me if I'm wrong), so if Dylan's have yoghurt and custard too etc sounds like he's doing just fine

Also remember he can get extra calcium from yoghurt, cheese, custard etc so if you are worried about this milk intake you could top up with these foods. Sounds like he is a pretty good eater, so he should be fine.

When I weaned Ella (she was 2) I just offered her milk with her breakfast (in addition to it being on her porriage) and then a milo just before bed.

    Author: Dylans_Mummy
Subject: 29676
Posted: 02 November 2009 at 11:45am

Hi all, just a question regarding my little boy who will be turning one in a month!

He has been fully breastfed since birth - would never take a bottle, and I have JUST got him drinking small amounts of cows milk/toddler milk out of his sippy cup.

He is down to one decent morning and night (sometimes the night feed isn't so much as he is full from a big dinner) breastfeed, and maybe a feed before his arvo nap.

He has sips of water/milk throughout the day but doesn't drink a whole cup at a time or a half a cup or anything like that - just small sips.

My question is - how much milk does he really need? He's getting a bit from his breastfeeds so i'm happy with that. Should I just continue to offer small amounts after meals?

This weaning business is confusing!!

When I fully wean him - how does it work then? Just follow up all meals with a sippy cup of milk?

I will talk to plunket etc when I see them next, just looking for what other Mums do!

Sorry if this is a silly question, first time Mum and just wanting my boy to be getting enough of everything!!

Thanks in advance!!

& I must add the has has milk on his cereal, and 3 decent meals and snacks a day - along with yoghurt/custard etc.

Edited by Dylans_Mummy
