We're big hungry caterpillar fans here too . I read DS all sorts of books, especially ones with lots of rhyme and rhythm, even if the language is quite complex. Little people love the sound of your voice, and it's great to expose them to neat language right from the beginning (ex teacher speaks...)

Some of our faves are The Gruffalo & The Gruffalo's Child, The Terrible Plop, and a lovely book called Pearl Barley & Charlie Parsley. Andrew has one short board book I read to him everytime I put him to bed as part of his sleep routine, it's just a sparkly book title that I got from the warehouse.  Michaela "reads" him a story that has single pictures and few words and he also sits in on her bedtime story which is generally a lot longer than anything I'd read him. 

I think the fact that you're reading to them matters more than what you read.

We read a mix of books to Jackson. The ones Im reading at the moment are Usborne Farmyard Tales - The little book of Farmyard Tales, Fisher Price, Explore the Rainforest and Nursery Rhymes (sorry cant remember the Author). Alex loves the Begin Smart, Books for Brainy Babies series. They're from Whitcoulls and work in age ranges. He's got a couple of the newborn - 6 months ones and just stares at them constantly. there are a rangeof books - the publisher is "priddy books" and they have real pictures and are great. I'd give you ours, but they have had such vigorous "reading" that they really are in no shape to be handed on.. Nana bought them from the warehouse and whitcoulls I think. all under $10.

I have been reading to DD from pretty much day one and most of the books she has are board books that I got from the warehouse, they usually have some cool ones with photos of different things e.g. one is animals another is colours and so on. They were approx $3 - $5 and they are also great to put on the floor for them to look at as they stand up and the books are so small you don't have to worry about them falling over onto your wee babies.

DH reads a short book every night to Jake. He likes ones that rhymes and he usually sings them to him LOL.

During the day we might "read" a book or 2 and its his cloth books with just one word on each page. When E was the age of your girls I was reading my books to her - she thoroughly enjoyed Anne McCaffrey novels

I think just hearing you read to them is worth so much. But the books that I read WITH her were very basic - a single word, with simple picture, on a plain background. One image per page.

I just got ones with all pictures and no words, then ones about babys first words etc - mostly just loaned them from the library so we could change them.
did you get anything from the library after the girls were born? you get one for free its either white on black or black on white
if not Id go to your local one and ask for one - or two

What kind of books do you read to your baby, and what kind of books do you read WITH your baby...so bright coloured ones kind of thing.

I want to get some so I'm prepared, as reading is really important to us and I want them to get the best start that they can.
