I basically received the bad news and then had an amnio straight away.

Later on, I went on to have further procedures that were similar and found I coped better when I had time to prepare.

I never once looked at the needle (head in the sand kind of thinking )

I also got cramps afterward and period like pains, but just took things easy for a day or two.

Good luck with your amnio, hope you get good news.

I live in Akl and had it done at National Womens when I was 16 weeks pregnant. I too was scared (my 1st child has specal needs hence the test). I was more scared of the results than the test.

The team at NW were amazing, so kind and understanding and the skills of the Dr's and Midwivees were outstanding. I had a local and the pain was minimal. I had some very minor cramping and rested for the rest of the day and by the end of that it was all fine.

I think it is more of a intellectual agony than a physical one. Best of luck to you.

The he 'stabbed' it in my tummy - I was thinking 'hey theres a baby in there be careful!'

it honestly does not take long and once out thats basically it. I made the mistake by looking at the needle afterwards and so felt a wee bit hot - and my friend who had one done said she did the same so be prepared to feel that way - perhaps cause you think about it more and worry all is ok?

I had to have an anti d due to negative blood type but if you positive blood type you won't have to do anything else.

they advise to rest for the next 24 hours - but i went shopping (as had to wait 3 hours for the anti d) I guess you just don't want to do huge exercise or heavy lifting etc...

Any questions you can ask here or if want an answer quicker or don't want to ask it publicly you can PM me

Edited by Chickaboo

I can't make it sound okay. Whopping long needle and for me they had to go in 3 times to get the right sample. It wasn't agony but was fairly unpleasant, although for me it was confirming horrible news so I was weeping even before it started which I'm sure didn't help my coping skills. They let you watch baby on the screen whilst they're doing it though. But TAKE SOMEONE WITH YOU! One of the nurses held my hand (which I really appreciated) 'cause it was last minute and my boyfriend hadn't arrived yet.
