Woah! $200!! I never knew how lucky we are gettting the rotavirus vaccine free as part of the standard schedule in Oz! One drink at 2 months old then a second drink at 4 months.

Monikah - worth asking your dr the questions though. I don't know the reasoning behind the 24 weeks thing. Maybe it's a case of most babies are around that age if/when they get it??? Gosh if I had of known there was a vaccine for Rotovirus BEFORE Lauren got it, I would have made her have it. She got Rotovirus while we were away camping last Christmas and we spent alot of time in Whangarei hospital.

My poor girl was so so ill with it, then my Mum and DH got it too. Just to let you know that there are 2 parts to the vaccine and both need to be completed by the 24 week mark and the 2nd dose needs to be at least a month after the first dose - so you may be outside the time period. yea it is oral and has to be done before your kids are 24 weeks so i only have 2.5 weeks to get it done :S

it is rotavirus only, not noro and it costs up to about $200. the only reason im thinking of getting is done is because i study immunology at uni and i was looking at the stats today while i was and a medical institute that speacialises in immunology and vaccination. the lady that runs the infectious disease and a junior staff member who is working on rotavirus at the moment so i guess its just close to home for me. also DS will be in the uni creche soon not in home day care and i know they have had it a few times. if i havent heard from my doc by the end of 2mrw ill call them again :)

becuase there isnt alot of genetic mutation with rotavirus if you have had it once you immune system has already produced antibodies which will jump into action real quick if you are exposed again so you will only get a very very mild case if you even get sick at all. norovirus is another story unfortunitly but not as common

I think they are for babies before 6 months old (but could be wrong on this) as they're most at risk from severe dehydration. I only found out about it a few months back.

The thing about Rotavirus is that it doesn't mutate very frequently which is why most of the popluation have had it by the time they are 5 - and why your kid can get a horrendous vomiting bug and you not catch it.

Norovirus is not in the same boat though AFAIK.

TBH if your child isn't in daycare or similar or frequently exposed to children who are (like older siblings) it's not that likely that they will get it.

What is there seriously a jab for this??? We had noravirus & rotavirus within a month with our bubs - the joys of DC. Does it really work? We have just had this done but our drs don't carry the vaccine normally so they had to order in specially. This is easy to do and your normal dr should be able to get it for you when they do a normal vaccione order.
