Author: lizzieg
Subject: 28881
Posted: 04 October 2016 at 4:29pm

Thanks for posting. I am also RH neg. My first husband was also RH neg which I thought was a fantastic coincidence and let me off the hook with potential problems. When I went for amniocentosis, at which there is a risk of bloods mixing, the staff tried to give me the Anti D injection. Now I am not adverse to treatments but I didn't want unnecessary treatments. So I carefully explained that we were both RH negative and it wasn't an issue. The nurse kept insisting. Finally she called the doctor, who said "a positive could slip in". "What on earth do you mean?" I asked. Two negatives cannot make a positive! Then he explained what he meant....turns out that a high percentage of pregnancies are not to the partner....yikes, that would complicate things! After I signed the waiver they went ahead without the anti D. I am now in my second pregnancy with my second husband. He hasn't done a blood test yet but I am pretty sure he is RH positive. This time around I will be getting the treatment. Thanks for your timely post and I am truly sorry to hear what you went through.
Just need a shot if you have any spotting, I did have some at 7 week's but midwife said it's more of an issue after 8 weeks as placenta takes over. Also after birth if bubs RH+. I did have an antibody shot during my last miscarriage. I've found its good to remind medical professionals as sometimes they forget.

Edited by Pitter patter - 13 December 2013 at 2:56pm

I had a blood type and hold done for a c-section and they discovered the anti-bodies at 36 wks. My level would have been about the same as yours, I was told that baby may need to go under lights if his biliruben levels were raised, however he was fine so didn't need to. At these low levels the anti-bodies don't generally cause too much issue for baby. My levels with my 3rd pregnancy got to 1:132 and my wee girl managed to avoid going under lights (she was the same blood type as me, but my levels still rose during the pregnancy)

My blood tests at 5 weeks pregnant in 2nd pregnancy (this one) indicated that I had developed the antibodies but only at a 1/1 titre. I had regular blood tests initially and the antibodies disappeared. But got a call today after my 38 week bloods to say that the antibodies have returned and are now at a titre of 1/16. I have been asked to return for more blood tests in 2 days and if levels have increased any I may be induced which doesn't seem too bad as I will be over 39 weeks by then anyway. Just nervous as to the affect these antibodies may be having on my unborn baby. Would rather get induced if the risk of any complications is lessened. By the way, I had Anti D injection after giving birth to my darling daughter but not during the pregnancy!!

Reminded me to reply..
Things are going good. Have one more growth scan in 4 weeks..had one yesterday. Babys liver and brain blood flow are normal, but at the high end of the normal range whereas her body is measuring in the middle of normal range. So if they were more matched up it would have been my last scan but no :(. The doc made me go for my last lot of blood tests too. These ones should definitely tell whether or not i have made antibodies, as the anti d should be all out of my system so wont get confused. The hospital should have those results by friday.
2 months till baby is born and things are going good. Still cant believe she lost a third of her blood. i cant wait to find out her blood type i bet after all this she is negative too.
Thats about it :D

Looking forward to that one will give us a uge peace of mind if they come back fine. Our case is being used as a teaching discussion for the students since its so weird. Give them all a good example of how anti works etc. So im glad there is some good coming out of me being in hospital so much :)

This time had a big bleed. 2 teaspoons as aposed to 2 drops. No fetal blood in mine so that was fine. They kept me in overnight to tell me the next day the bleeding is always going to happen and not much they can do about it but watch to see if baby gets anemic. Not long till im 24 weeks. And im 24 weeks on my birthday so its a double good sign. Had my appointment with specialist on Wednesday and she said shes not too worried about baby's blood type all she aims from this pregnancy is for her to have a full RBC count at birth. If another big bleed happens again, the 24ml/vol in my blood, before 30 weeks they will give her the transfusion and if after they will take her out. My Obs goal is to make it to 30 weeks. All of baby's scans are fine and her kicks have been strong. No liver engorgement or severe anemia yet. Still have to have the weekly scans. They are going to reassess next Friday after my next scan. Im in midwife limbo atm, getting put on to a hospital team since my independent dumped me :(. Have my first antenatal with them this week too. A bit low at the moment as i have the flu or something, gotta go see my GP. Stupid weekend. But on the plus baby is healthy and growing. :D will keep you all updated as it comes.

Your story made me more aware of what to expect. Its my first baby, had spotting last week so got the anti d and checked for why i was bleeding but no blood tests. Wednesday i went back, had small amount of spotting.. like two drops. Spent nine hours at hosipital thinking i was just getting the anti d. I still had a little left in my system from last week. Then they did more blood tests and found that 1/3 of babies blood is in my system. They thought it was a lab error because it was so high. Came running down the corridors to get another sample. But that showed the same. So then they gave me 2 vials of anti d. Then i had to stay over night so they could scan baby. I could feel her wriggling around and punching me so i wasnt too worried. The scan turned out to be fine. Took forever to get to see her brain. We had two anatomy scans in the past couple of weeks and both failed to see her brain/face. And she still was difficult. I had to lie upside down to get a good look. They are watching for anemia. And to see if her liver gets too overworked in replacing the blood she has lost. So we are now in specialist team care, have the head of department as my obstetrician. She seems awesome. We are getting scanned weekly and they will test for antibodies in a month, 'cause aparently thats how long it will take if i produce them and for them to get into babies system. This is all not knowing her blood type. So she could be negative.. we dont know. They seem fine with the bleeding and told me baby has systems in place to take care of that herself. Im 22 weeks atm btw. it is all just wait and see now. :)

I have not heard of anyone having rhesus disease and it sounds so scary...

I didn't get antiD until they had checked my son's blood type as he has turned out to be Rh+. I had heard they routinely vaccinate in Oz but not here, interesting that they actually can, just choose not to! Guess my mw isn't on that bandwagon yet.

This time my mw asked me if I'd had the jab when C was born and then made sure they checked for antibodies at the 12 week & 28 week bloods, think its just one of the boxes they tick on the referral form. So far so good...
