I really had to persevere with my son but we got him there. He would suck it only as long i would hold it in his mouth. So i'd hold it in with one finger while doing other things and eventually (weeks) he just figured it out. I know the advise i was given was to lightly pull it away which is supposed to make them suck it back in but that didn't work for us.

Worth the effort by the way! He has 80% of his sleeps without it but some days he is just attached to the thing, which is better than attached to me all day. And is also great for babysitters - they have an easy solution if he wakes while you are out.

Isabella gags and spits her's out a lot, I sort of wiggle it in her mouth gently and that coaxes her to suck on it,

I can't get Natalie to take a dummy either... tried tapping it but she mostly just chews on it briefly then spits it out. Or she gags on it. I would recommend tapping it, worked a charm with my boy as he wanted to be permanently attached to me before gettign him used to the dummy.
