We've finished having babies and my husband is planning going to the V Man so I was thinking about using Depo until his op. I was on the depo as well, when we decided to ttc i waited 3 months after the depo ran out and went to see a naturopath, and got pregnant 6 weeks later.

Just adding my bit about IUD, I had one for about four years and had no problems with it at all, but (TMI sorry!) I had some really bad yeast infections on it so wouldn't go back to it. It is a good option though with not having to fuss around with pills.

Good to hear that the implant can be removed if you want before the four/five years is up? Me and DH are definitely going on some kind of birth control, Baby 1 happened really quickly! I was on Depo and that worked fine for me but there's waaaaay too many horror stories about Depo for me to want to risk that again with wanting more kids eventually. We just got super lucky I think that this baby arrived after three months off Depo and only one actual period!

I am still breastfeeding my nearly five month old and the pill I am taking - Noriday doesn't affect my milk but lets me get on with life without stressing about getting pregnant. Caution though when you stop breastfeeding you have to change pills. I stopped breastfeeding my eldest at 18months and ended up pregnant with my second son who I am currently feeding. I would never want another new born baby over Winter in the South Island it's too cold!! I was on Depo for years, and was living in Oz when the implants became popular. But there were a few problems - some people got pregnant because they weren't inserted properly (they weren't put in!). Which was amazing considering you should be able to feel it.

So, while I think they're a great idea, with the wonderful bonus over the injection that you can just have it taken out if it doesn't agree, do maybe ask the person doing it how experienced they are. When I moved back to NZ they weren't available here, and now I'd want to wait a few months after they are widely available to check there are no problems.

Jadelle implants use a low continuous release of a synthetic hormone (levonogestral (progestogen like)) - and work by stopping ovulation and thickening your CM. From memory the implants do a slow release of progesterone which would stop ovulation? If Noriday caused your milk supply to decrease do you think the implants would do the same?
I'm not keen on a IUD for personal reasons but these implants sounds good. oh no missy gal dont say that. I got pregnant on the minipill - taking it religiously and i was still breastfeeding too. So thats not an option for us this time. I had an IUD inserted 6 weeks pp...I would recommend that you wait until at least 10 weeks if not 12 weeks pp especially if you have had a natural birth.

I got my IUD taken out after 6 weeks of having it. We think it was in the wrong place. Well the IUDs were my favourite option after my first child... but unfortunately after I stopped breastfeeding I got pregnant straight away... So now I have two wee lovely's. So I guess I was the unlucky 1%. Since that happened I have heard quite a few tales of others who have been pregnant with a standard IUD. This time I have a mirena... not sure of my opinion of it yet though as I have continual spotting... only had it for a couple of months though. I might see if I can get that implant here if DH hasnt had the snip. I'm going for an IUD this time around (prob just the copper as don't want hormones back in - have migraines and IBS that flare up on the pill). I'm panicking about it already, don't want to use condoms as they hurt like hell for the first wee while (well did for me last time anyway) so want to get in to get the IUD ASAP after giving birth, which I hear is 6 weeks but sometimes they recommend waiting a bit longer if you're still a bit tender etc.

Good question, I am on the pill right now but after reading this it seems very common to have an IUD. Why is that?? I only really hear of people who have had children that get IUD's.

Emmecat, you can do NFP while BF, but in order for it to be effective your period will have to have come back, so you know where you are in your cycle, so to speak. We use a combination of NFP and condoms - we used condoms exclusively until AF returned (13 weeks after birth, fully BF), and for the first cycle, just while we waited to see what would happen (sometimes you're not as regular as you were before). Thankfully I appear to have popped right back into my normal cycles, so NFP is back on the menu.

Oh I went in to my local family planning centre (thanks for the tip josephinia), and they don't have the implanon available until the end of the year, but they have the Jadelle implant available now!!!! Safe while BF, 5 years of protection, the down side is the specialist that can do them only come up here from wellington once a month. So I've spoken to my DP, and am waiting for his decision as to whether I can get one put in at the end of August (have to ask in case he wants another baby). Hmmm thanks for all the replies ladies....gives me lots to think about!

I have mastitis AGAIN....2nd time in 3 weeks  so sex is totally off the menu lol...but Dr has given me script for mini pill..Noriday? Not sure I like the sound of it TBH. But then I don't really fancy IUD either now.....so guess its condoms,  NFP(if we can do that while BF?) or abstinence lol. Pretty sure DF won't go for the last option.....

I desperatly wanted the implant when I looked at contraception at my 6 week check, but it wasn't available here - all my friends in Oz had them and loved them, it's called the Implanon, it uses a slow release hormone system so doesn't have many side effects at all, and if it does have a negative effect on you it's easy to take out (which makes it much better then the injection). I know that IUD's definately do work for a lot of people but I've heard way too many horror stories about them to even consider one. I will refrain from sharing though as I don't want to terrify anyone.

 

Is the Depo/Injection safe to go on while BFing?

 

I had some bad side effects with the Depo too but of all the contraceptives I've tried, it was the best. Any form of pill makes me nauseous, IUD's are a horror story for me and condoms...well me and latex don't get along so great.

Would be interested in the implant in the arm that someone mentioned earlier.

I have a mirena and loved it, got it when Caprece was 12 weeks and it didn't interfere with bfing. I thought getting it in was fine, a wee bit crampy but nothing that bad. Others have said it was terribly painful but none of them have kids lol

I love mine and didn't have a period for a good year. however now they are getting closer and closer and longer and longer so I am going to have a wee check up soon. The standard one is free for a start and the mirena costs about $300.
The standard one is just a copper one and the mirena has slow release hormones as well, so is suppose to be more reliable as you have both things working for you and I think is recommended for women who have heavy/painful periods. But if the pill doesn't agree with you then the mirena probably wouldn't either. I found when I came off the pill I get virtually no headaches or migraines so I dont' want to ever go the hormone route again. The standard one is 99% effective, so far better than the pill or condoms anyway.

If you are thinking of getting an IUD I would advise that you do as much research on them as possible to ensure they are the correct thing for you.

I had a Mirena before we started TTCing but had numerous problems with it.
I kept on getting ovarian cysts which required surgery to remove (apparently 10% of Mirena users develop cysts), painful intercourse, headaches, nausea, mood swings & just felt awful.
It took the Dr's 2 years to find out what the problem was & I had CT scans, ultrasounds, blood tests etc until I was finally referred to a specialist who told me that the Mirena can cause all those problems & he advised me to have it removed.
On top of all that in order to remove it I had to have a D & C as the strings had slipped up into my uterus.

Once it was taken out I have not looked back & have had no more problems & I swear I will never get one again.

In saying that though, I have also heard of some people having wonderful experiences with them, so it just goes to show that everyone is different.

But please make sure you are aware of all the side effects before committing to any form of contraception, especially something as invasive as an IUD, which in my experience was not pleasant to have inserted either.

I had my IUD fitted when Kyle was 10 weeks old and it was a bit uncomfy and crampy but not painful. If you can have contractions then having an IUD fitted is a walk in the park. Plus having it soon after a baby means that it's less painful as the cervix is easier for them to open. The most annoying bit was bleeding for about a week after it was fitted (by bleeding I mean spotting not bleeding bleeding).

Apart from the IUD we are also using painful scar tissue left by 2nd degree internal tear and a baby that feeds twice a night and rarely sleeps as contraception. Hey Karen, I'm going to get an IUD (when I get brave enough to ring my doctor and ask if they do that lol), because I second the rip your head off and eat it rather than get pregnant comment. And as for whether it hurts or not... Not as much as giving birth, I'm sure!!!!!!!

i got pregnant while on the mini-pill and was taking it exactly as directed etc so did my mum. Might be something to think about if you really really dont want to get pregnant again Luckily we werent too worried lol. However after this baby weve got to sort something out as 3 under 3 is not something im keen to experience lol. Apparently the mini pill is ok while breastfeeding? Only problem is you have to take it at the same time everyday. Could be difficult with "baby brain".

Before Blake I had an implant in my arm, forget what it's called but I think it's progesterone only so does that make it safe while bfing? Not sure but I loved it, just get it put in then forget about it and it lasts 4 or 5 years and I had zero side effects. Hi...ok, so TMi....BUT.....

What do you guys think is the best contraception to use after having baby?

Clodagh is 9 weeks old now (how did that happen?? ) and DF and I are *finally* thinking about having sex again lol

But as I would rather rip my head off and eat it than get pg again so we need to use contraception...however as we were using NFP before this and I haven't yet had a period, I'm not so sure how to go about using this method.

I'm not overly keen to take the pill as I'm fully BF.....but then having said that I don't know much about what's available these days so any feedback would be welcome. Also any ideas about any other form of contraception apart from condoms (which we'll use unless somethng better turns up).
