My boy slept in a hat for his first few weeks, and that was in February! It was a crappy weather month though, and he was born 4 weeks early.
These days he usually has his thin merino beanie when we go out on cold days - have to be careful I don't overdress him because he's a hot-blooded little boy!

Around here you see mums all rugged up in jackets and their babies in nothing but a light dress with no socks or cardi - surely if you need to put a jacket/jumper on yourself you should do the same for your baby

In this part of the country its far too cold to go with out hats.

and i myself gave my boy heat rash in the middle of winter. babies cant regulate their temperatures, putting a hat on them makes it even harder as there is no release for the heat! (of course this wouldnt apply if they were outside in a blizzard etc.!

i would've said something and you're not wrong in mentioning it! I sometimes forget a hat for DS but it's only between getting out of the house and into the car so it's not as big of a deal then deliberately going out the house sans hat. I think the gift thing would be a good idea b/c you can then remind her that it's important to have the baby covered up since he/she doesn't have any hair (i hope this is the case so she can understand what the baby must be feeling like! brrrr!!!)poor baby!

please mention it next time you see her (for baby's sake!)

Caden always had a woolen beanie on when he was really little when we went out. If he was in his pram and all covered up and I had the storm cover on Id take his hat off usually, but if we were out in the cold it was always on, as babies lose so much ehat through their heads.

Even now when Im out, I put a beanie on Caden, he pulls them off a lot but I put it right back on his head! Being that I am expecting my first no real first hand experience aside from our godkids but I would put a hat on myself, and have a few already packed for when bubs is here, but then I am also the sort of person that will probably lose it with in an hour if we were out. I must be way to old fashioned cos I get annoyed all the time at someone we see a lot of who has never dressed their child appropriatly for the weather! Alex is so gonna be wearing hats and singlet that do up under his bum til he I can no longer find ones that fit

well it would depend - if the baby was in a pram all rugged up with blankets and there wasnt a blizzard howling about the baby then i dont see why not. all you can do is mention it...you cant force people to put hats on their babies!

My DH took DD out in the cold the other morning without a hat on and the following day she had her first cold! I always put a hat on to go outside even if its just a walk to the letterbox, especially since she does not have much hair.

LOL FionaandFinley, I remember Maya sleeping in hats a lot over her first winter coz we didn't have good heating.

I probably would have commented too, altho a friend and I frequently have debates about how much clothing is necessary lol, I tend towads overdressing my kids, whereas she is more relaxed.

Mine always wore hats for the first few months, poor lil miss used to get bundled up in layer upon layer when I took her out lol coz she was born in the middle of winter.

I've just bought her a lovely woolly merino hat from Three Bags Full and my sole reason for buying it is that it has a tie on it so she can't get it off.

Angus hates wearing hats, always does his best to wriggle it off, so i either have a blanket going up round his head or have a jumper on him with a hood, but this last week its freezing so he has no choice but to constantly be wearing one... he is getting used to it.
Also with mittens, he loves his hands and they are like his little comfort thing, people always go on where are his mittens, but he screams, the rest of him is warm just cold little hands. However with the cold lately i put him to sleep then sneak the mittens on, and try and take them off just before he wakes.

I get annoyed at people commenting about mittens, my baby he dont like them... but if its just because she doesnt like them thats stupid!!! M didn't wear many hats but she really seemed to feel the heat and would get very cranky. I did if it was cool though and we were going out.

I've just gone and bought some Merino ones today as it's far too cold for a little one to be out without one.

When I was in hospital I was told my baby should wear a hat at all times for the first 3 or 4 weeks, so Chelsea always had a hat on (and she was born in Feb!). Even now she's 3 months old she always has a hat on to go outside.

I'd have mentioned the lack of hat too. It's too cold not to have a hat - Elizabeth HATES hats but even now she wears a hat whenever we leave the house - hat on inside, into carseat, she takes aht off. Hat back on when I get her out of the car, she takes the hat off as soon as I put her down inside. Maybe you could buy the newborn a hat as a present? Then she might feel guilty if she knows she is going to see you and put it on him then. Ok, I am sorry this may be a wee bit of a rant but it has been nugging me the last few days and need to get it off my chest.

So on Thursday I went out for lunch with a cousin and her 2 week old baby. I was shocked to see he was outside on a freezing day without a hat

Am I oldfashioned to think a newborn should always be wearing a hat. Surely its common sense to keep them warm and the loose a lot of their heat through their heads?? I sorta made a comment about his cold little head and she just said 'oh I dont like hats'. And I, not being the argumentitive person, backed down and changed the topic.

I know everyone chooses to do things in their own way and I dont want to seem like I am telling her what to do. What would you do or say in this situation??
