I myself considered it a minor risk and thought that it is more risky to let the baby cough and get cold. It turned out that overheating is an important risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome.

When overheats, the baby's heart, lungs and sweat glands must work harder to cool down.

Even though thermal stress has proven to be fatal for babies all around the world. There is a lack of information on the topic. Dr. Warren Guntheroth, with the department of pediatrics at the University Of Washington School Of Medicine, in Seattle, said that this is one of the important features of prevention aside from the "Back Sleep" program (an educational initiative which reduced SIDS deaths by about half).

-------------

and i myself gave my boy heat rash in the middle of winter. babies cant regulate their temperatures, putting a hat on them makes it even harder as there is no release for the heat! (of course this wouldnt apply if they were outside in a blizzard etc.! )

I did if it was cool though and we were going out.

I've just gone and bought some Merino ones today as it's far too cold for a little one to be out without one.

I would have made the same comment that you did but me being me probably would have bollocked her lol.

Even now she's 3 months old she always has a hat on to go outside.
Like you, I'm not an argumentative person so not sure how I would have handled your situation, sorry train of thought derailed by my screaming baby!

It's too cold not to have a hat - Elizabeth HATES hats but even now she wears a hat whenever we leave the house - hat on inside, into carseat, she takes aht off. Hat back on when I get her out of the car, she takes the hat off as soon as I put her down inside. Maybe you could buy the newborn a hat as a present? Then she might feel guilty if she knows she is going to see you and put it on him then. (sort of like we all get those ugly knitted cardigans that stay at the bottom of the drawer unless we know we are seeing great aunty Doreen)

I was shocked to see he was outside on a freezing day without a hat

Am I oldfashioned to think a newborn should always be wearing a hat. Surely its common sense to keep them warm and the loose a lot of their heat through their heads?? I sorta made a comment about his cold little head and she just said 'oh I dont like hats'. And I, not being the argumentitive person, backed down and changed the topic.

I know everyone chooses to do things in their own way and I dont want to seem like I am telling her what to do. What would you do or say in this situation??
