They're now home and have survived the first night there (bit of a shock for the dad!). They've got milk to get through the day and I'm picking more up this afternoon so it will keep them going for a bit. Lammy, your 3L will be MOST appreciated as it will take some pressure off.

    Author: Siananigan
Subject: 26492
Posted: 14 May 2009 at 8:29pm

Just some additional info on BM for those who are curious!

Breastmilk is a live product and contrary to the restrictive guidelines advised by plunket it lasts much longer refrigerated than the stipulated 24-48hrs. Up to 7 days in the right temps. After storage Breastmilk can actually have less bad bacteria than it intially started with because of the nice little antibodys. Of course still sterilise and once frozen it does lose some of it's awesomeness but when compared to formula it is still better to have breastmilk from another mother. Dr Jack Newman a lactation specialist says that even mothers who smoke or take certain drugs (medical or otherwise) should STILL breastfeed because as a risk assessment breastmilk is a better option than formula. I am not saying wey hey go nuts. No drugs/ciggarettes is still optimal. In saying this, I know that any mum who is moved to donate BM for a worthy cause is extremely unlikely to be the kind of mum who would not sterilise or to smoke knowing the milk is going to a newborn.

I did talk to her mum about the difference between milk from a mum with a 10 month old and a newborn and she said that while there's a difference, it's not significant when compared to the difference between BM and FF. I initially was only getting milk from people I knew as that gives a level of protection but there is only so much they can give. TBH, to a degree, it is on trust that people are not giving milk that might have alcohol/meds/nicotine etc in it. I think this case and many others that are similar (e.g. mums with cancer) is an excellent example of why we need milk banks like they have in Aus (and are trying to get in Chch) so that there is some security with it.

I couldn't imagine why anybody who cared enough to donate wouldn't care enough to make sure that what they donate is suitable for a newborn, iygwim.

Personally I'm not donating stuff that I had previously expressed, only milk I have expressed since I found out about this wee one and I know I have been absolutely scrupulous about sterilising everything and making sure I have freshly clean hands etc. (Now JJ's a bit older I admit I'm normally not as meticulous about all that as I was when he was ickle.)

    Author: fire_engine
Subject: 26492
Posted: 13 May 2009 at 7:21pm

A request ....

I have a friend who has been diagnosed with a tumour in her pituitary gland. This is the gland that produces all the reproductive and BF hormones. She has no prolactin, the crucial hormone for BF. She was diagnosed a week ago and had her baby on Tuesday. She really wants to BF and she is going to give it a damned good go (her mum is an LC so she is in very capable hands). While we're waiting to find out what her hormones are going to do, she is relying on EBM and is very reluctant to use formula. Some of the wonderful July mums have donated some EBM. I am wondering if anyone has EBM in the freezer that is less than 3 months old that they would consider donating to a new mum and baby.

I realise this is quite an unusual request so will not be surprised if no one is able to help. I have been was absolutely amazed by the very generous mums who have donated. The mum and grandma are so incredibly incredibly grateful. I am asking on the off chance that people may have some spare. I am very happy to come and pick it up (I call it my milk run). Please feel free to PM me to get more info.

Edited by Flissty
