We've never been timid with bath time so the girls have always been used to getting water on their faces. They get startled but get over it quickly.

It never bothered Lauren at all. Sometimes she will inhale a bit of water and she has a little cough and splutter, she loves swimming lessons!!

I also agree on the cue, we go 1, 2, 3, (then take a big breath) then we take her under.

Sam did swallow a little and coughed and spluttered a wee bit afterwards, but didn't cry. We had been preparing her by gently pouring water over her head to make sure she would close her eyes and mouth.
She never actually closed her mouth, but it didn't seem to bother her.

Maddi is still startled every time we do it but then she gets the biggest grin on her face. It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

If you want to prepare her a wee bit just in the bath go 1 2 3 under hold your mouth close and sprinkle a little over her face.

I am a swimming instructor (or was now I'm a full time mummy). babies have many different reactions to being under water but I have to say most of the time its just fine with them.
They blenk alot and sometime cough a bit but be assured it is very uncommon for them to breath in the water. I worked for 5 years as a swimming instructor and never once did I have a baby full breath the water in.
Remember to give your baby the ques you are told to give and then no matter what her reaction is your reaction is Praise, excitment and calm. If Ava feels like you think she will be scared then she will be but if you show her its all okay she'll take her ques from you.
It is scary putting your child under the water for the first few times (I remember when DS was six weeks old and doing it with him I was so nervous and that with being an instructor.).

For those of you who have had swimming lessons for 6 month plus babies, how did your baby react when they had to go under water for the first time?
