Author: clover
Subject: 25376
Posted: 31 March 2009 at 12:50pm

I don't know whether to post this or not but I figure I will just so you can make sure that you are fully informed and that the doctors make sure it heals properly without complications.

I am deaf in my left ear from having a perforated ear drum as a small child. It was a freak occurance, and in most cases they heal without incident, but mine caused an abundance of scar tissue and skin to grow my mastoid cavity destroying the small bones in the cavity which transmit sound allowing you to hear. I have an empty mastoid cavity and an eardrum rebuilt with muscle from my neck.

I don't imagine that anything like this will happen but you did ask if there was a chance of any complications so I thought I'd let you know the brief laymans version of my story.

Just make sure you go to the follow up appointment and keep an eye on her for any signs of hearing loss. Mine wasn't picked up until the hearing tests they did at school, by then it was too late.

(more prone to getting a burst ear drum if infected?)

The doc wants to see her in another week, but I feel so guilty that I was wondering if anyone here knows?

Thanks
