I finally decided on a second hand Heart and Home solid rimu cot . Now onto mattresses and bedding etc!

I have a solid Heart Rimu cot that my dad got made for me out of recycled wood. It was what I wanted so we got it.

We have a "matching" change table that is pine but has a Rimu stain.

If you can afford rimu and prefer it to pine then you should get rimu.

We bought a second hand white Touchwood cot which was in pretty good condition for $250 - I wanted white, and Touchwood is the 'premier' brand in NZ so you know the quality is good. I think most cots are pine these days.

I really love our cot too - it's solid rimu, but we bought it as an heirloom and everyone comments on how beautiful it is. It was from Heart & Home

We had a rimu dressing table that matches really well (it was mine when I was a child) but we have a white change table (we just bought a cheapy one and we painted white), that looks nice with it - the eclectic look is quite trendy now, as long as you pair a wooden cot with painted furniture (not a rimu cot with a pine change table IYKWIM).

And I don't see any problem with buying second hand, as long as you check it out thoroughly and make sure it's sound before you buy it.

I personally love my cot - it's pine with rimu stain, panelled ends, looks stunning. It was purchased new, but will be used for the next 3years for sleeping in, and is convertable by taking a side off to a couch for her room, so even if we don't have any more children it will be used and loved for at least the next 10 years. I'm lucky enough to have a handy DP, he made my change table from assorted native timbers to match the cot. This will be used as storage for her room when we no longer need a change table. And he felt so proud to be able to do something to contribute to the nursery. We have pine as I dont like the wood look so Issys is white and we are having Elias's professionally painted blue.

We purchased both cots 2nd hand.

Im not sure how long you think a bub stays in a cot .. but I see them as long term investments, especially since Issy is still in hers and probably will be for quite awhile to come yet.

That meant that we had to purchase another cot (although we got away with only having one bassinette and hammock, as Issy had outgrown those before this bub needs them).

I dont think she would have outgrown her cot by the time Elias requires a "real" bed lol

Hi everyone!

1) I cannot decide between getting a solid Rimu or a Pine with Rimu stain cot! Help! I would be grateful for your thoughts!

I really love solid Rimu but of course they are more expensive ... and then there is the change table and poss additional furniture to go with it. I wonder whether it is just not worth the extra expense seeing that it isn't something that will be used for many years. Having said that this is baby number one and hopefully a second one will arrive in the future! I like the idea of Rimu esp. since it may not wear and tear as quickly!

2) I also cannot decide whether to get a new one or 2nd hand (if I went for 2nd hand I would def. look to get a new mattress etc)

Your views and expereince would be greatly appreciated!
