Author: Alanismum
Subject: 23930
Posted: 26 January 2009 at 11:25am

I weaned Alani quite a bit earlier but I only dropped one feed per month. She was weaned by the time she turned one.
Try to get rid of the night ones first. Then I did the morning one. Very helpful if hubby can get her up and give her breakfast.
The before bed one was also the last one for us and it also worked that dad put her to bed and just offered her water. Very quickly she had forgotten what breastfeeding was about. Quite sad in a way cause it's a big thing for mums and the little ones.
My breasts didn't really leak, but a week after I stopped bfing I got my period back and then they were sore and leaked. Two days later it was all fine and never had any problems since then.
But watch your breasts for any lumps, you can still get mastitis.

I know she isn't going to like it one little bit, so am going to wait for a long weekend when we have nothing on and then give it a go.

I think the morning would be the easiest for us to drop as well, as she now has breakfast staight away and then has her milk afterwards. Luckily she loves cold milk in her sipper cup, so I guess that's half the battle.

wearning- any tips : Yup. With the night feed, try...

With the night feed, try giving her a quick hug and tucking her back to bed. If she won't have that, you'll have to offer her water. But you'll probably find that it's a comfort/habit thing by now anyway. So do that right off.

I find the morning one the next easiest to stop. When she wakes up in the morning, instead of doing the snuggly routine, just get up cheerily (hehe or at least try to!) and make her breakfast. If she tries to snuggle into you (probably out of habit more than anything), turn her away from you and read a book or something.

The night one is last. At her age she shouldn't need a milk drink replacement unless she is usually up quite late after dinner. My girls tended to drop this one easily - almost as if they had forgotten about it - once the morning feed was dropped. Just tuck her into bed after the dinner/bed routine with a teddy bear or similar and see what happens.

Weaning Jack for me was quite easy as by 1yo he wasn't very interested anyway so his feeds were very small. I think I just dropped a feed a week. I don't really know how long it took for my milk to dry up, I never had any probs with leaking and I was not uncomfortable after I stopped feeding him. There is a homeopathic milk stop that you could try once you have weaned

Just wondering if anyone has any tips for weaning a very addicated toddler? and how long did it take for you to wean? I was thinking of dropping 1 feed a week (she currently feeds morning, night and often has a feed during the night).

also how long after weaning does it take for your milk to dry up? I will be weaning at the same time as changing my pill prescription so am hoping that will speed up the process.

Cheers,

edited cos I can't spell

Edited by Mum2Ella
