kitkat.....yes and no.. 50% of all allergic babies are from parents with no allergies..but you are more pre disposed if your parents have allergies..

skp.... I need to find the handout..but the short story is if you have a c-section like me the baby is missing out in swallowing the tiny bits of poo that they would otherwise and then they get the good bacteria in their digestive system....

so all babies like mine who go to Rodney(Ford paed and allergy spec) get probiotics to help with allergies and to gain the good bacteria needed ...

Oh and in regards to someones comment above, egg allergy is a pain. Eggs are in almost everything, I've ended up in hospital twice due to eating things that either contained a tiny amount of egg that wasn't stated on packaging or traces of. It's not pleasant and a lot of immunisations are egg based, and with general anaesthetic they have to use an alternative concoction.

No allergies in family history but my mum ate a lot of peanut butter, eggs etc and I have fatal allergies to peanuts, all nut varieties, eggs, fish, seafood and chicken (and anything with traces of the stuff) I go into anaphylactic shock and body shuts down, need to carry adrenaline shot with me at all times. She was told by the allergy specialist that yes her diet in pregnancy could have caused the peanut and egg allergy. Its funny- youd think that being exposed to peanuts inutero would actually prevent the allergy- like immunity. wierd.

Im scared to think of the allergies our little guy might have. Im highly allergic to bananas, and my bro is allergic to all raw vegies, and nuts, and fruit.

I have had 2 pieces of peanut butter on toast this pregnancy.... Id love more.

Luck of the draw surely at the end of the day.... isnt it more about genes?

My DH has an egg allergy, fruit allergy, bad asthma eczema and hayfever and we were told that if you had food allergies, asthma, eczema or hayfever that you should avoid peanuts as the baby could end up having a peanut allergy (have heard nothing about baby possibly having an egg allergy even though DH has a really bad allergy).... so I have avoided peanuts the whole pregnancy.

I have done lots of research on the internet and there is lots of talk now saying that maybe you should eat peanuts as in China they have a really low rate of children having peanut allergies whereas in the UK peanut allergies are getting worse over the last 10 years while they have been telling mums not to eat peanuts while pregnant.

I know that doesn't help at all, it has been a huge decision for me of whether I should eat peanuts or not... the last thing I want is bubs to have a peanut allergy!

Also if there is a risk of bubs being allergic to eggs you will have to make a decision about immunising or not as lots are cultured on eggs... I'm of the 'everything in moderation' opinion as well.

Also, Eimear is intolerant to gluten, dairy, yeast and lots of different fruit, while Aoife can eat everything you put in front of her.

but;... 50% of children who have allergies have no family history at all ..so it's really often pot luck..our allergy guy said not to avoid food and to have a probiotic in the 3rd tri and the 1st months of baby's life.. (probiotics a whole another subject but esp important after c section can help some with prevention of allergies and eczema)

so in short if we get preg again i won't be avoiding it but i won't be having much.. i do think in preg it's important to go with what you feel like eating as there generally seems to be a reason for it..

I think it depends on whether you have allergies in the family. It's more important to avoid these if you're bfeeding and have a family history of allergies.

I avoided peanuts when pregnant, but had peanuts, dairy and soy when bfeeding, and Eva is allergic to all three

I thought you need to get heaps fo dairy so you get enough calcium? I also heard that staying away from ceratin foods completely and then introducing them can trigger and allergy... Hmm interestingly enough i watched something last year about allergies and apparntly in places where they have a die where bub is exposed to nuts from very early on there are no allergies. Makes you wonder. I had an absolute peanut craving when I was preggers. I ate hundreds upon hundreds of peanuts. I've heard the same, but have also heard about contradicting studies that say not being exposed to nuts at all can also cause allergies!
I think the scientific jury is still out, I reckon a little bit is fine, in moderation. I love peanut butter too, I just try not to eat too much. You'll be fine!

I've been told by various people (not medical professionals) to stay away from nuts because it can cause baby to be allergic to nuts? And eggs (even hard boiled) and too much dairy etc... I have been eating a lot of peanut butter on toast! I can't seem to find anything on this and forgot to ask my midwife the other day.
