It does vary quite a bit from OB to OB & hospital to hospital. Usually though a previous c-section means you have the option to have an elective c-section paid for by the public health system.

I have been told that public hospitals have a strict budget for c/s so they will try to push for VBAC but I don't think legally they can refuse you if you have had a C/S previously and feel strongly that you want another. I had to really push for an elect C/S with twins! Luckily Esme was breech so they caved in the end lol! Charges will be incurred for:
• Birthing in a private hospital
• Some tests e.g. ultrasound scans undertaken by certain facilities
• Childbirth education classes (although these are sometimes free)
• All pregnancy, labour and birth care for non-New Zealand residents i.e. the public hospital will charge   
• An antenatal visit for advice to a private obstetrician may cost approximately $100-150 per visit.
• LMC care from a private obstetrician will cost around $2500-$4,000 (latter figure for Auckland).

I agree with you SolitaireDiamond. There is no way i want a VBAC, especially after the horrible labour i had! The internet doesnt really have much information about the costs of C-sections etc...
Which is why i turned to here.

Having heard some people though, that say they are having trouble getting a second really freaks me out cos there is no way I want a VBAC!! Issy was an emergency c .. and (at least in central Auckland) they offer you the option of an elective C, which is done for free via the public health system.

Even if you want a VBAC at about 30 weeks you HAVE to go into the hospital and discuss the complications that can arise with trying a VBAC with the OB staff at the hospital.

Im not sure where you are, but you may want to discuss it with your mw.

yeah my mw talked with me before my mc about it again and no cost mentioned just a discussion with OB but she said it was my choice whether elective c section or not.

My first was a cs and when I went to see the OB before no2 was born he was happy to do whatever I wanted, ( just happened to want to try for a VBAC) no cost was ever discussed.

If you go public they will generally push for a VBAC unless there is a strong case to perform another c-sec. I know this because they are still umming and ahhing about whether they will give me another c-sec (despite my pleas to have one) due to how my last birth went. If they decide to go for a VBAC you have a trial of labour, where they "see how it goes" and you are monitored quite a bit during labour.

To avoid all this you can pay for a c-sec, but I believe it costs around $5000 so not usually an option for a lot of people.

Hi Everyone,
I am new to Oh Baby.
I have a 18month old baby girl who was delivered by C-Section after a lenghty labour. We are trying for a 2nd baby and i am not keen on a VBAC so i am wanting to know what costs are involved with a 2nd C-Section?

If anyone has any information it would be much appreciated.
