Yep it took me awhile to figure out how to go from one income to none .. hence only being able to afford five months off work..

Last time I went back to work when Isabella was 4 days old. I only went in for meetings though so spent a good part of each day with her for 4 months.

I stayed home 8 months last time and DH left his job one month before I went back to work so we had some overlap time to help us all adjust. That was great, although I do recall DH seemed to spend more time in the garden than looking after DS during that month.

Next time ideally I'd love to stay home for a full year, or at the least 6 months, but it will depend on finances and whether DH could get a temporary job to allow that to happen.  Technically I would have felt OK about returning to work with DS when he was 6 months old as that is when he finally started sleeping through the night, and he was fully bottle fed, so not attached to me in that way. But was glad to stay home for a couple of months longer as I started to feel better after catching up on my sleep and enjoyed DS more and more.

DH really loves being a SAHD and we're lucky here in that quite a few Dads seem to be taking on that role - our coffee group has 3 full-time SAHDs .

I'm planning to stay home 6 months this time. My sister had twin boys and she spent the first 6 months at home then her DH did 6 months. After that they hired a nanny and went back to work full time.
Its a lovely idea though I like the idea of the guy getting to have the full experience of being a parent. Although her DH found it really hard because he didn't know any other SAHD's to talk to and found it a little bit uncomfortable being the only man at an mothers coffee group lol! Just wondering, how long are you planning on taking off after the birth of your child if your DH is a stay at home dad?

When we have a 2nd, DH will become a SAHD and I will return to work but what would be a reasonable amount of time to stay at home?
