Author: Troods
Subject: 23004
Posted: 09 December 2008 at 9:47pm

Hmmmm, maybe it's only a procedure of the Counties District Health Board for preterm babies discharged from CDHB care to have audiology tests at 3 months. I know of another lady and her preterm boy who lives in Botany and he was a Middlemore NICU baby so falls under CDHB care and had to go for the audiology test as well. Maybe because your Emma was in Auckland hosp follow-up care is different for the area? Strange as you would think follow-up care would be standard for preterm babies all over the country. But I guess as each health board is run differently to the next, they each have their own rules and procedures (just to confuse us ). Maybe they already did the audiology test in the hospital before Emma was discharged but you were not aware of it? If you think Emma is reacting well to sound etc then you've probably got nothing to worry about there. But if you are concerned I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask the Dr to check back on her hospital notes for you whether she needs a test or not, or if she already had one.

Em is doing well by the way, thanks for asking. She's still little though but I think she's got my genetics to thank for that

No we didn't get a hearing test. I did tell the doc during our apptm that I was not worried about Emma's hearing - she's reacting well to sound etc - maybe that's why? We too were supposed to have a 9 months apptm but that's in a few days and I have not heard from anyone.
How's Em doing by the way?
tishy, when did your girls get to be 10 months? How time flies!

This was at Middlemore.

After she was discharged from hospital, she was under the follow-up care of the kidzfirst nurse who made several home visits for the first 6 weeks as Em was still underweight (an IUGR baby) but otherwise doing fine.

The hospital told us Em would be due a follow-up appt at the manukau superclinic at 3 months. But by the time I heard from them and an appt was made she was 5 months. She also had a hearing test at the superclinic at 3 months which apparently is procedure for preterm babies. Did your girl have this?

I was told Em would be due her next follow-up appt at the superclinic at 9 months, but i'm still waiting to get an appt letter.

After the kidzfirst nurse discharged Em from her follow-up care, Em has been seen by plunket.

Since then, we have had 1 apptm at Akl Hospital (where she was born). Is this normal? We were supposed to get another apptm this month but have not received a letter or heard from anyone!
Does this sound normal? I thought that premmies were monitored more closely than this?
Thanks
