We didn't wrap Hannah for very long (1-2 mos?) but Briona was about 9mos - otherwise she just would not stay asleep. I think Kryssi must have been about 6mos when we stopped wrapping her.

I agree with the others, many parents swaddle their babies WAY older than that.. the only time I actually stopped was because my boy kept busting out of it but started waking all the time due to it! That's when he went into the Peke Moe.

In regards to the muslin wraps, you can also make your own, get muslin in the size you want from fabric shop and just 'hem/edge' it yourself,

Thanks so much all!! Yes I thought it sounded weird as our Antenatal teacher had always said she had swaddled until her kids were almost 1 year!

Will just keep doin what we are doin and buy some more of that fantatsic muslin!! Just throwing in what we do, there is no way we can stop swaddling if our boy has his arms free he gets worked up and won't settle. So I swaddle his arms down by his side to keep him still but don't wrap him right the way round, so not to over cook him, hope that makes sense.

It works anyway.

I swaddled all of mine till at least 7 mths, and in the summer I used muslin like the others have suggested. The Baby Factory sell 2 packs of the 120cmx120cm muslins for about $14, that's the cheapest I've seen them. Hannah (also a newborn in Jan/Feb) was swaddled in muslin and just wore a nappy during the day sleeps and a onesie and muslin wrap at night.

Yep in summer we wrapped our boy (who was newborn at the time) in muslin. During the day he was most often in just a nappy and the muslin wrap.

Your plunket nurses advice was very odd! Yup, JJ's only just younger than Hayley and I'll still be swaddling, although I'm starting to experiment with one arm out etc. I've got a SwaddleMe and some great oversized muslin wraps we got on trademe.

Hmm, I imagine we will still be swaddling DD in summer and she is nearly 5 months. Will just be using a muslin wrap and if need be she will just be in a nappy with a sheet. She sleeps WAYYYY better when wrapped!

your plunket nurse told you what???  I thought they recommend swaddling for the first 5-6 months.  I know I was shown by a kariatane nurse not to lay their arms by their sied but to cross them on their chest as thats more natural for things like tummy time and crawling later but I would say definately still swaddle.  The startle reflex doesnt start to disappear till 3-4months.

 

 

Correct me if I am wrong.  I am wanting to swaddle my baby (due in Jan) and was hoping muslin would do the trick.  I didnt use the gogo bag on Tom till he was about 6 months.

Don't want to overheat my wee cherub (now 7 wks) and thought maybe just a muslin wrap would do for summer.... have a gogo bag that I haven't used yet - and was thinking swaddling over that (even with muslin) may be too hot for him?

Also when do people generally stop swaddling??The plunket nurse told me I should have stopped already as babies like to sleep with their arms above their shoulders..... But if I let him do that he flails and wriggles around and gets no sleep.... ??? Confused!!!
