I did this with Lauren about 2 or 3 months ago and did it for 6 weeks as she wasn't lasting the whole night without wanting a bottle.

After 6 weeks of dreamfeeing I noticed she was drinking less and less of it so she pretty much self weaned off the dreamfeed herself, but it got us through a really rough patch of numerous night time wakings.

I just gave her a dreamfeed whenever I went to bed, be it 9pm or 11pm, I made it fit in with my sleep schedule and it worked a treat!

Just recently she's started waking at 1am, but not for a bottle, she thinks its playtime! I am yet to cure this habit now

Good luck!

I tried the watering-down-the-bottle thing (half formula/half water) and she drank it anyway - I figured this meant she actually needed it.

Last night she slept through until 5am though which is a big improvement on the last week so fingers crossed it was just a phase - if she had kept waking at 2am or 3am I think my next step would have been to offer only water.

    Author: Maya
Subject: 21774
Posted: 18 October 2008 at 9:16pm

It may have started off as hunger coz he was unwell, but it can become habitual far too quickly! Sienna started night waking at about 11 mths and I started giving her a bottle to settle her, 13 mths later and her sleep is an absolute shambles. I am up to her multiple times each night, a bottle no longer fixes the problem, now she wants out of bed and screams and screams.

If you're not keen on the crying it out method, you could try either reducing the amount of milk you gve him at that night feed til eventually he's not having any, or you could offer him water instead so there's no motivation for him to call out to you.

The only thing I can really say is if you can, get it sorted now - I took the easy option of feeding her at the time and I am paying the price now!

    Author: oneplusone
Subject: 21774
Posted: 18 October 2008 at 9:06pm

At 10 months old Jonathan finally started sleeping thru 11 or 12 hours - bliss! After two weeks of this he got a cold and was very congested. He woke several times a night very hungry/thirsty and obviously needed extra fluids. The cold has been and gone, he's not teething, he's eating well during the day but since then he's been waking around 2 or 3 in the morning and wanting a full bottle of milk. He settles pretty quickly after that and goes back to sleep. I'm happy to try to knock this on the head to get him back to sleeping thru but can't help but think if he's taking a whole bottle, he must need it. Am I right or can this be habitual too? I usually give him his evening bottle of milk around 6pm. If he doesn't take much of it, I'm not surprised to find him waking later but for the last two nights he's had a decent drink before going to bed and is still waking. Interested to hear anyones thoughts.
