Fiona S - I have to agree with you about plunket (have only been dealing with then for 2 weeks, but so far - GREAT!!). The nurse visited yesterday and could see it was a bad day, she gave lots of helpful advice and then called me in the evening to make sure everything was ok. We went every week for the first few months and it was a life saver. Elle was a very very unsettled baby who didn't sleep during the day (even they couldn't get her to sleep past the 10min mark!). They were so wonderful to me and allowed us to go every week so I could have a break and a nap. One of the nurses at our local plunket centre is now our plunket nurse and I adore her. They were fantastic. Have been to the family centre in Hamilton with both my girls...the ladies there are so lovely....and maureen is so on to it....am sure they will be able to help you.

Most areas have them Kathyandbub, your midwife or Plunket nurse should be able to tell you whether there is one local to you.

I had great experiences at Family Centre with Maya and the gremlins, with Maya we went for feeding help as she had poor weight gains and I had nasty mastitis and they were great, I also watched the tired signs and breastfeeding videos. We went twice, once at 2 weeks and once at 4 weeks.

With the gremlins I went every week for the first 8-9 weeks, originally for feeding help but even when we realised feeding was never going to work they had me come in for a sleep while they watched the gremlins. We went at 3ish month for sleep problems, was only sleeping on cycle in the day then getting really upset, we stayed from when they first opened till about 1pm in the afternoon but could have stayed longer if I had wanted to. We went for trouble feeding and sleeping and got a lot of help. We ended up going back a couple times a week (not full day visits though) for about 3 weeks so they could help monitor her weight and make more suggestions on how to get her to feed. The ladies really went out of their way to help out and came up with so many suggestions.

It never hurts to go and hear what they say. Yep Issy and I went to the family centre (sleeping) .. then when I went back to work and DH took over the stay at home parent role .. he and Issy went into the Family Centre so he could learn to pick up her sleep cues and what to do to settle her etc.

Hayley and I are off to the Family centre on Monday as we have had quite a few nightmare days with feeding, settling, wind and her generally being a spilly baby!

My plunket nurse said they will watch me feed her etc.

I would love to hear of any of your experiences at a family centre and if you thought it was beneficial
