I hope that ends up being the case for you Caro, that nathan helps keep your mind off all the upcoming procedures etc...

These supplements will be good for us both and particularly DH as he has sperm antibodies and DNA frag issues. (thats why our problems).. when i spoke to the naturapath on the phone she was telling me that more and more men are having issues in fertility and also the dna issues... She seemed to know about this problem and says she recommends a consultation and then she can put us on a course of herbs etc - she recommends at least 3 mths of this prior to trying to concieve... Who knows we will try anything!!

I had a post on another forum by a girl who said they went on naturopath herbs/supplements and within 3 mths got preggers naturally!! Her DH had bad sperm dna damage... so thats very encouraging isnt it..

Thats my quick update... any comments most welcome :)

Edited by mtjt

It really is the most wonderful thing.
mtjt- The doner and his family(wife+kids) were good friends before and nothing has changed. We also wondered about how it would change our friend ship but it hasnt at all. They are still good friends, they dont intrude, they dont over step the mark, but they are there if we need them and we still see them about the same amount as we did. They gave us an amazing gift we have no idea how we could ever thank them. I guess the best way we can thank them is to be the best parents we can be.
We will be going back to the clinic in the next few months so I might join back in on these threads, Ill keep you all posted.

He has 3 children already so doesnt have that desire for it to be his own child- and he knows this is my/our dream together- our specialist said we had >50% dna frag, and as we had spent so much $$$$ we knew that this was the best option for us. But you are right- you HAVE to be ready for it.

I so hope that this cycle is the one for you and that you get a BFP. We won't be far off each other.

Its still amazing that you can experience a pregnancy and you and DH can still experience the joy of a new baby in your arms (even though technically donors sperm), Is your friend in your babys life at all?
The reason im a bit curious is that the "donor" sperm question has been suggested to us to maybe think about. (much to my despair) as this is an option if we can get preggers with DH sperm after our last try.. The donor issue is another subject completely and probably requires a whole lot of research and thought...
Still im thrilled for you and good luck!!

Sadly that didnt work and after much sole searching we decided to use a doner, we were lucky and had a friend offer. I am SO pleased that we decided to take that option as we are now the proud parents of a happy and healthy 11 month old, and we are getting ready to do it all again! It wasnt an easy thing to decide to do but we are so pleased that we did. I dont think DF could love our boy any more than he does. He is his dad and DS is such a Daddys boy. It was the best thing we ever decided to do and cant wait to do it again for #2!
NEN10- DF loves to tell everyone that I was impregnated by a woman! It was after a very non romantic breakfast and a trip to the classic car auction to kill time and take our minds off what lay ahead!!!!

We are on the public funded waiting list and doing ICSI next July, I think it's great that you are doing a private cycle, I keep swinging that way myself as I can't stand the waiting and not being able to do anything, but DH just wants to wait until the funded cycle which is fair enough.

He too felt like he had let me down hugely when we found out we were dealing with MFI, my tests have all come back okay so far so he feels gutted that I am the one who has to go through all the invasive IVF stuff....but I have never though of it that way, to me we are in this together and I always try to refer to it as 'our' thing.

Mtjt, Good luck for your 4th round...I don't know too much about tesa although it has been brought up by our FS if DH's count keeps getting lower...That's good that your DH didn't find it as bad as he thought it would be!
I notice you're in tauranga too...are you part of the support group there?I was just at my first meeting a few weeks ago, found it great.Anyway hope everything goes well for you and fingers crossed your bfp isn't too far away.

We're heading for IVF too, though publicly as our funding comes up in January. It's not easy to go through this, for either party. Hang in there, it's wonderful that you can get started with IVF quickly, and hopefully your wee miracle happens in the not too distant future. Where are you based in the country? We were not given the option of IUI, probably because my DH's sperm do not swim very well, which means there is a very slim chance that they will reach the egg and penetrate. Hence the ICSI procedure where they physically place the sperm inside the egg, so that it does not have to make the effort to move at all! The waiting list really sucks for infertility doesn't it. We are over in Auckland and were told that it was a 18 mth wait, but because of my age, we cannot wait that long, so we forked out privately - ouch!! At least you have plenty of time to prepare yourself for it - good luck

We are on the waiting list at Hamilton FA for ICSI next October- a 20 month waiting list, I couldn't believe it when I found out how long we would have to wait. But am getting over it now and trying to stay positive and enjoy the next 20 months as time with DH! I have been reading a bit about other ladies on here doing IUI even with a low count and was just wondering if this might be an option for us to try while we are waiting? The FS never mentioned it to us so maybe it's just not possible...does anyone else know much about it? And also was interested about the horny goat weed- I have read about that before but didn't want to waste our money...but now I have seen a success story so might try it! Rubyrock congrats on your BFP-that's awesome! xx

We were devastated, I still have twinges around pregnant women and babies although its been over 2 years since we found out. People have stopped asking when we;re having kids now, thank goodness. I still cry at night sometimes when i thing what could have been[

QUOTE=olympics] Hi all

My partner and I tried to conceive for about 18 months before finally seeking help at Fertility Associates. I was completely shocked to find out that our issue was due to him having a low (pretty much zero) sperm count. Up to that point I had imagined it was all me! We don't know why he has no sperm - everything we could think of seemed to be ruled out by the specialist. (We still suspect that it is due to an illness he suffered as a child that meant he was on antibiotics for 18 years but the specialist seems to think there is no research evidence to support this!) Any way we now find ourselves counting on someone donating sperm to be able to conceive. I can 't imagine the guilt my beautiful man must feel every time we see a baby, or every time I get upset at our situation. He is very private about it and so we haven't told anyone about our circumstances. This makes it a bit of a lonely journey but I respect his need for privacy.
I emphathise with any one in this situation - it is really hard and I wish you all the luck in the world.[/QUOTE]

Edited by topcat

We are on our second round of IVF now. Also I had to loose weight and yes it is hard. I had already lost some weight before hand, but the moment I found out I had to, for some reason it was a lot harder. It was also upsetting, because although I would never blame my fiance, the fact I had to loose so much weight before I was considered really hurt, as I am perfectly fertile. Once more, I had to do the treatment/drugs/egg collection etc. Of course I would do anything to have a baby with my lovely fiance, but it feels like a kick in the gut when the doctors say oh no, you must loose weight first.
Just stay strong and picture that beautiful baby in your arms at the end of it. It's so worth it.

I had a huge water retention problem and my dr put me on this for a month and combined with good eating and exercise I lost 10kgs in a month!!! Hope you can get some. It is a class C controlled drug so some drs are reluctant to prescribe it and it is pricey put so worth it.

I emphathise with any one in this situation - it is really hard and I wish you all the luck in the world.

Edited by olympics

Their specialist recomment these kinds of things to help produce the best swimmers.
It takes 3mths for any alterations to lifestyle to show an affect on the swimmers. As that is the life cycle of swimmers.
1. No heat to the groin area. This includes no hot tubs, hot showers, Jacuzzis or hot saunas or laptops on the knees. It takes 74 days to make swimmers so avoid heat for approximately 3 months prior to trying to conceive or checking a swimmer analysis.
2. Stay well hydrated.
3. Eat a healthy balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
4. Eat beef three times a week.
5. Try to ejaculate approximately every 24-48 hours, to keep the system revved up.
6. Avoid testosterone replacement and all male hormone/androgen supplements. These can drastically reduce and even zero-out your swimmers count. Most often these counts return overtime, but some men remain sterile permanently.
7. Absolutely no tobacco in any for.
8. Absolutely no marijuana or other drug use, as these are associated with reduced testosterone levels and poor swimmers counts and morphology (can be an indication of chromosomal abnormalities).
9. Alcohol in moderation. Excess or binge drinking or heavy drinking is associated with significant swimmer toxicity.
Anti-oxidants
1. Selenium 200 micrograms once a day
2. Vitamin C, 250-500 mg, 3 times a day
3. Vitamin E 400 international units once a day
4. Zinc 50-100 mg once a day
5. Coenzyme Q10 30-50 mg once a day
6. Folic acid 400 micrograms a day
7. B complex once a day
8. Fish oil capsules, 2-3 times a day
9. Multivitamin with trace minerals once a day

I hope this helps.
Centrum makes a good multi-vitamin that has most of the list and what is left out add with the individual pills.
Or there is this you can buy from overseas.
http://www.fertilityblend.com.html/fertilityblend_optimize_repro.html
It wasn't until a couple of weeks later that the reality actually set in, and i fully understood that this was probably the ONLY way our dreams of having a baby were to come true and that was when i became a bit of a mess - talk about delayed reaction. However i think once you start the journey even if the journey is just beginning with starting to lose weight, then at least you feel like you are doing something positive . . small steps and all that. Author: catie
Subject: 20078
Posted: 14 August 2008 at 1:36pm

Hi

We had male factor infertility, combined with my age. I think it's worth knowing that semen quality can vary a lot, and it can often be improved to some extent. My DH had low count, mortility and morphology following a vasectomy reversal for the first couple of years and when we first went to F+ they were quite discouraging about IUI based on a SA done several months earlier, which showed 100,000 sperm with only 5% motility. But since then he had done acupuncture and vitamin and mineral supplments and with another SA was done it had improved markedly, to just below 'normal' - 10million, 55% motility. Since then it has varied a bit, e.g. we've had 3 IUI attempts (unsuccessful); the first one after the sperm had been prepared (which includes wahing away the 'sluggish' ones etc), there 400,000; 2nd time there were 3 million; 3rd time there were 800,000, and we were all ready for a 4th attempt but the semen count was too low. About 6 weeks before that last one DH had been really sick, and we think that, combined with the medication he took, caused the low count. so we're now in the process of getting as healthy as possible before having one more go in a couple of months, but it's been recommended that DH have a series of SA's done first to try to be sure it'll all be good on the day.

So there is hope! I'm a researcher so had looked through the medical journals that specialise in (in)fertility, and there does seem to be some evidence for other supplments in addition to Menavit, but more research needs to be done. However, I do think these others helped us (though improving diet was also a factor, i'm sure): L-Carnitine, L-Arginine and Co-Enzyme Q-10. Gets expensive though, esp the Carnitine (Vita-fit brand is best value).

Sorry about the novel, but good luck!

We had less than 5% normal sperm, a very high count, but motility and morphology were a bust.

DH is a very relaxed sort, and I don't think he ever actually felt bad about it for himself at all - he was able to acknowledge the lifestyle factors, and just sheer crap luck that meant that we had to go down that track.

You're not a fraud at all being on the forum silly thing, you are half of an infertile couple! Infertility sucks no matter how much chocolate you coat it in

When you think about it, you've a problem shared to an extent - your weight will hold you up qualifying for publicly funded treatment, and you're having to shed it in the first place because you have male factor infertility All I can say re your appointment today is be prepared to receive the advice that ICSI is your best option, and believe me, IVF is hard, but it's not the end of the world. You want that baby, right? In the meantime, give yourself goals re weight loss and work hard, with all the motivation you have for that baby. I'm not entirely sure, but I actually think that even private IVF will refuse to do the course if your weight is an issue due to reduced chance of success. It's a lot of money down the drain, so it's worth it. Also, we went through F+ and they were gorgeous - they also have lower fees for ICSI - by a couple of thousand from memory.

Also, if you can, try and isolate factors which may be contributing to the sperm problem - sometimes it can help

I feel like a fraud being in this part of the forum as theres nothing wrong with me, as the ticker shows, I already have one DS (to previous marriage) but we have been trying officially for over a year now..DP has some serious issues with count and morphology, at last check he didnt even have enough viable swimmers to attempt IUI...

We are due to visit FA in Aucks on Tuesday arvo to find out his latest results (doing another SA tomorrow) and I am really scared of what we will find out, but don't know how to talk to DP... If I am scared about whats going to happen from here... how must HE be feeling, being the reason why we are having to get help in the first place?...He had to go on a 3 month course of Menevit to see if it made a diff to count/morphology... but 4 months later I am still not preg...af due tomorrow/Friday, but temps indicate its def coming...

IVF and ICSI were mentioned at the last appt as our possibly only alternative... we dont even have $1K, let alone 10... and I am currently about 20kg over my max weight to be at a BMI of 32... I am working on it... but I hate that we have to be doing this in the first place, and then I hate that I am the reason we are stuck at this point until i can get down to the weight I need to be... (sucks being a shorty sometimes lol)

is there anyone else who has Male Factor Infertility?
