Amy was in the capsule until she was 5 months - too heavy to carry after that!!

She moved into a Safe n Sound AHR and it has been great. We just moved her to a Safe n Sound booster seat last week as her little sister will need the other seat soon. Sophie has stayed in the capsule longer as she is much smaller at the same age and a capsule for a second baby is so much easier when you have a toddler on the loose - I can pop the capsule down and chase Amy if I have to!!

Emma - I would recommend hiring a capsule for the first couple of months as little babies sleep so much and if you have a bigger seat you disturb them every time you get in and out of the car. Plunket have a range of seat that they hire and some are quite cheep for a 6 month rental (also they install it which is good for peace of mind). Thanks for all your input. I also got excellent advise and information from staff at Babystar. In the end we bought the Safe N Sound Royale convertible car seat. The great thing was that Babystar said if I find it somewhere else cheaper they will match the price. So I went on the internet and in the end got it for 319 instead of 379. (Babyfactory and Babycity wanted even 399 for it) If you have a Babystar near you, I can only recommend them. They have done all the training on car seats and help you to install it too. cool - sorry for kind of thread-jacking this but its great finding out what you guys already know!!

DH wants to know how easy it is to take out the safe n sound ones when they are in 'capsule' or newborn mode - obviously they'll be a lot heavier than a standard capsule so I guess they're designed to stay in the car at all times and not bought in and out!? Please let me know!

Yes we've bought a Safe n Sound Royale (from Kiwibaby) too, although we'll be using the capsule for a while yet. I've just been out, and noticed for the first time that the tether straps on my Royale do go across the door a bit. Clearly not a major problem though if I haven't noticed before now!
They only come a few inches above the side of the seat, and certainly not high enough for them to be in the way.

We had Livvy in her capsule until about 4 months and then had to pass on the capsule to the next baby in the family and we got given my sisters Safe n Sound Royale convertible car seat. It has the straps going across the door as well and it is a bit annoying but quite managable. I would've thought most rear facing seats would need it though.

There was a car seat review on here a while back for one that didn't have straps in the way and it was a great review but the car seats were quite pricey from memory. I'll try and find the thread and bump it.

We changed Drew over awhile ago now, he was a big buddha and had outgrown his capsule!! We have a safe and sound meridian which is fantastic, it rear faces til 12kgs which is another point to consider when buying one, ideally you want them to rear face as long as they can so check this out, some seats you can only rear face til 9kgs.  Hope this helps!

It does sound like the teether strap ... its used when rear facing so goes around the seat and anchors in the boot/hatch part of the car.

I imagine all carseats have these.

We have a Safe & Sound convertible that we've used since birth. It's been really good. Emachan we originally bought the phil & teds one but exchanged it cos when we put it in the car, we felt it didn't go back far enough for a newborn. We had a convertible (Safe & Sound Royale) in DH's car from the start, and just used the P&T capsule in my car. He is now over 6 months so have just bought a second Royale for my car.

We got them from Kiwibaby as they are miles cheaper there - $349 on the website compared to $399 at the Baby Factory. (was $329 instore as well)

There is no seatbelt strap in the way though? The straps go up the foot end (rear facing) and over the back seat to the anchor point. that sounds like it would be the tether strap which if the seat has it then it has to be used..our safe and sounds as that ..I normally just pull miss over that. Blair was in his capsule until he was about 4 or 5 months primarily due to length. oh - also, I noticed on my friends Phil and Teds car seat (rear facing at the moment for her 5 month old) has the seat belt going right across where the door is where she puts her baby in - so she has to go under or over it - do the safe n sound ones have this problem too!??

I'm glad that there is a recent thread on this - I typed in 'car seats' in the search and man, are there lots of threads or what!?!

We've thought about now just getting a convertible car seat instead of borrowing our friends capsule - we were lucky to get some money sent over from the UK to help pay for some kind of 'big' baby thing from my Sister in Law, so I thought of getting a convertible seat rather than a capsule then a seat -

We moved Issy out of her capsule and into a carseat not long after her three month "birthday" as they recalled the capsule (it was an Evenflo).

She is now rear facing on the newborn setting of the carseat. We have a safe and sound. He was in that pretty early as its rear facing or forward facing. But we used the capsule when using DH's car.

If you can keep your baby rear facing for as long as you can. It is the safest way for your baby to be.

We had a Mothers Choice convertible it is shorter but still has done well with my 2 tall boys.

With Josh I had him in the capsule till 5 months and then into the converable but still rear facing till he was 11 months old.

We hired a capsule for 6 months and Gabs is almost 5 months now and we have to give it back in a week or so, so our decision was already made for us. We could have extended the time we kept it as Gabs is only a small bubba and would be okay in it for another couple of months, but it would have cost us extra, so we just went out this weekend and bought a safe n sound guardian carseat. Safe n sound are more expensive but you get what you pay for, they have been tested more extensively than some other brands and have a better guarantee.

However, you are probably best to go into one of the baby shops or talk to plunket about it if you're not sure. we moved Ethan at 5 months as he is so long and was getting too big for it... we bought safe and sound one..the more expensive one as it was more padded and reclinable...(but turns out we can't recline due to the kind of car we have)...anyway he loves it and it's been great:)

When did you move your babies from the capsule into a car seat and which ones did you buy? My baby is 8 months old and even though the capsule goes up to 13 kgs I am thinking of moving her into a proper car seat soon.
